I'm from DR and travel there quite often. I do agree with you that the airport workers will try anything to get an extra couple of bucks out of you, but I feel that since they don't get paid much to do the job they're doing they'll try and make a few more dollars off of the tourists (and non-tourists because they pull that on Dominicans as well). I'm not trying to excuse their actions but I think that's why they do it. However, just because they try these things doesnt mean we have to give them the $$. Like lucy106 said - just say no thanks and keep going when they try and help with your bag. As far as the overweight luggage goes, I try to put my own luggage on the scale to avoid any of their tricks and if my luggage is overweight, I always carry bags in case I need to move stuff out of my suitcase and just carry that bag on the plane with me or I'll move stuff into my carry-on.

Pretty much all cell phone carriers from the US work in most parts of DR. The only areas where you will most likely have little or no service is in/around the countryside where the signals don't reach those areas since they're by the mountains.

This is one of the reasons why I picked the Barcelo Maya in the Mayan Riviera. The resort is big and it's broken out into 4 sections - ranging from low, moderate, high prices. The airfare will be the same regardless but at least my guests have a choice as to whether they want to high end section (Palace), the moderate section (Colonial and Tropical) or the lower end section (Beach).

Hi Jaime, I'm getting married at the Barcelo and my TA told me that in order to get the group rate everyone would have to have the same travel itinerary. I don't know how true or untrue this is but I just left it alone after that. I would suggest you call the actual resorts and ask them about their group rate policies - I should have done this from the get go but I didn't.
