I completely agree lscilley, better safe than sorry when it comes to travel. For me if there is a rusty nail in 10 miles of sand, I am sure to be the one to step on it. So I always try take precautions. -

She suggested that because there were Malaria warnings we should consider taking anti-malarial medication and if I was going to do so book an appointment 6 weeks before going so she could write me the prescription. lscilley: Sounds like you took the stuff my doctor was describing she would write the prescription for. -

Promise I won't forget to send. Yes I am doing fans wrapped in ribbon on the handles and a high level ceremony program attached to them. Got the fans at Oriental Trading Company for a fairly decent price. -
Malaria risk in the DR???
shellb replied to jmb0902's topic in Destination Weddings in Dominican Republic
Dosages I think it depends on the type of medication prescribed. I know the stuff my doctor is going to prescribe (not sure the name) it goes something like 1 dose 2 Mondays prior, another dose 1 Monday prior, 1 dose the Monday while there, and I think one a few Mondays after you get back. I have an appointment in early March for our late April wedding to get the prescription and details on how to take it. -
Malaria risk in the DR???

I think you are going to get differing answers from people. I've talked to 2 doctor's, my guests have talked to their doctors and we've also asked quite a few people we know that have been to PC and the answer always is diffferent depending on who you are talking to. One friend has been to PC 4 times and no shots or pills. Others say why knowingly expose yourself to a risk. CDC (US) & PHAC (Canada) both will err on the side of caution because there is a potential risk of exposure. My FI & I are choosing to do so as well and get the persciption from our doctor, who wants to end up with Malaria. To me it's worth the cost of a prescription to prevent a potential illness. We've also advised our guests and I would say 95% have gotten all shots and will be doing the Malaria pills. There are diseases you can pick up in any part of the world, not just DR (so don't let the risk of Malaria scare you). For example: * tick borne encephalitus in eastern Europe * monitoring for malaria in the Bahamas * water-borne diseases when swimming in rivers in Belize * Canadians are advised to be up to date on all their shots (tetanus, polio, diptherea, measles) before going to the US. My advice, be educated, talk to your health care professional and assess the risk from there. I would tell you guests to do the same. -
Take a look at this thread, pages 4 & 5 which talk about using glass glue: http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t25527 Also, you may find it cheaper at Kohl's.

Calling the fashion police!!

I second Jacilynda...do a test run on the hair and go try some more on. I am short too and planned on fingertip length thinking it would look best. First time, went with my hair pulled back straight in a pony tail and hated every one I tried. Second time, went with my hair in an up-do with curls (a little bit like I plan on wearing it) and actually learned that I like floor length. Although, that dress is gorgeous enough on it's own. -
What did you use?

We got some of the first aid kits at the dollar store for $1 (everywhere else I found in Canada was $2.99 and up per kit). The kit came with some basics like band-aids, gauze, anteseptic wipes, etc. And we are adding travel size tylenol, immodium, pepto and neosporin to fill them up. We are going to add a cute stick to the front. We got the extra stuff from: Minimus - For All Your Travel Size Item Needs -
Everything is going to be great! Wishing you a beautiful wedding! Can't wait to see pics when you return.

Forgot to mention mine was bought through Charm which is who I think you are going with. From my experience they are really good to work with to get what you are looking for. I was lucky enough to have the store manager as my sales person (sounds like you might be dealing with the manager as well) who knew you can get stones brought in if you are a serious buyer. When the Diamond / Jeweller guy comes to your store, he has tons of different color diamonds. He tried to sell us an orange one. He brings some really gorgeous stones. You are going to love it. Hope they have the stone you are looking for.

I am not a fan of lab created, I prefer the genuine stone. For sapphires, I do find a big difference. It's also a lot about the cut and size to get the color to come out. I know when we had my ring made, they brought in some sapphires (we knew the carats beforehand because I chose a mount for the ring that was going to be set). That's how we chose the one for my ring.

I have seen a lot of great reviews, the good outweigh the bad in my opinion. All resorts have their quirks and I think it would be impossible to please everyone. I say just be an educated reader of the reviews / threads and don't assume the worst (e.g. the recent heart attack I had over thinking outside photographers not being allowed got worked out for that couple and some of it seemed like it was a misunderstanding when I got the rest of the pieces to what happened). If you are on facebook check out the Melia Caribe Tropical Brides group. Also, check out the wedding section of Debbie's Dominican Forum because there is a huge thread on the Melia weddings (94 or pages, a lot to sift through but worth it). These might help you with more info on the Melia.

Veil length for short girls!
shellb replied to Jenn6603's topic in Destination Wedding Dresses, Wedding Attire & rings
5'2" here...I thought I was going to go with a fingertip length one with hair in an updo, but when I tried the different lengths on with my dress I was surprised that the floor length one looked best on me. I say try a few different lengths on and see what looks best. -
I am with Bridget810 on this and did the same thing. My FI said no way he would change his name and told me to do what I want. My latest decision, I think that I am going to hyphenate.

Thanks ladies! It's not the part that she's going to Mexico or not coming to our wedding, it's the BS excuse she gave that hurts. I have been fairly good so far in letting the stuff slide with the wedding except for 1 or 2 things that I let get to me. For a brief moment I did have thoughts about when it comes time for her wedding (which will be a DW) and intentionally not showing up or giving a BS excuse, but I know the guilt of doing that would get to me. Talked to my FI last night, his response, "their loss, not ours". He is so good at the not giving a crap or taking the laissez faire attitude with everything, you think by now some of would have worn off.

Can someone tell me what the secret to not giving a crap about things in general? You know I had taken the attitude that as long as my FI and I were there for the big day everything else was a bonus. Today, I log in to my facebook and see one of my good friends is going to Mexico next month when she had said a few months ago they'd love to go to our wedding but there was no way they could because they just bought a house, had all these extra expenses, etc. I was perfectly ok with that, but when I read her status today I felt like someone kicked me. I am happy that they are going to Mexico for a trip. I think people should do what makes them happy, but why not tell me from the beginning instead of a BS excuse. My FI tells my I let things get to me too much and take too much to heart. SO, can someone teach me or tell me the secret to not giving a crap because I seem to be losing the battle especially when it comes to this DW and people's behavior?

Have you checked out what the TA's on here can do for you? I would PM one of them to see what services they can offer you. Yay, another potential Melia bride!

I'd say I am middle of the road, we are trying to stay within our budget. My dress is not overly fancy, just a simple bridesmaid dress in ivory. Opted to only have a MOH and BM instead of a full wedding party. We did splurge on the photo's because alot of our family cannot come and we want great photos to help capture our day. We also have decided to do OOT (about $25pp) to say thank you to those few who are making the trip with us. Other than that we aren't doing favours, ceremony decorations, etc. I have a FMIL that wants me to get the horse and carriage but not sure if I even want the fuss. So you are by no means weird, you are having your wedding the way you want. Every bride and groom should get married the way they want. I think your way you are probably saving yourself so many headaches.

They are all adorable! Especially Roja, she is so sweet!
