  1. Bumped this up for TraceyB and any other Cuba brides out there. Roly is still going strong and is very active in the Varadero community. DH and I spent some time with Roly and his beautiful family this past March (2014) while visiting Varadero for my sister's wedding (Ocean Varadero El Patriarica - H10). He did not shoot the wedding for my sister (she brought a Canadian photographer with her). Above you will see examples of work that Roly had done for our "Cuban engagement photoshoot" - I see those photos and it feels like yesterday -- rather than six years and two beautiful babes ago. When we visited Roly in March he showed me some of his more recent work, he is always acquiring new gear and still does a wonderful job. He also takes people on private guided tours of Havana with photography... could be a cool excursion to offer to your guests. Peace out Brides! xox Mrs. Amarillis.
  2. I have raved about Roly many times before on here. He now has a facebook page "Havana Memories" it is loosely set up... but it can be a contact point for him. He is a great photographer and friend of mine. Please feel free to check out my wedding website, you'll see pictures of some of his work there. www.mywedding.com/chadandamy2009 Photos 8 and 9 of our 'pre wedding planning trip' http://www.mywedding.com/chadandamy2009/photo_61802_10928394.html were taken by Roly. He was also in attendance at the wedding and took pictures of what he liked to call "the making of Chad and Amy's wedding' (this was due to the fact that we brought our own photographer with us from Canada). In a nutshell, I HIGHLY recommend Roly. Feel free to contact me by email for more info. Ciao
  3. I am thrilled to hear you had a great experience. I would totally agree with everything you've said. I too was subject to terrible bug bites, but I experienced the same thing at all of the other resorts we've been to in Varadero. Some people have reactions.... bottom line. I too loved that they only had one wedding per day and made us feel like royalty! Glad to hear you had a great experience!!! Congratulations!!
  4. This is what we used -- it was included inside our passport invitations: The journey of our love began on the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean. We find it fitting to have our wedding there as well. We look forward to sharing our day with those who can join us. It is our hope that you hear the sound of the ocean as loudly as we hear wedding bells. Although it would be fantastic to have all of our loved ones there as witnesses, we understand that limitations exist. For those who are unable to join us, it is our hope that you look south on our special day and say a prayer, wishing us well as we begin our new lives together. Hope this helps!`
  5. Karla, Your planning thread is awesome! Congrats girl!!! only one week to go!
  6. Beach Wedding Shirts | Guayaberas, Linen Pants, Boys Linen Shirts, Mexican Wedding Shirts. Alexis is a BDW vendor... this is where we got all of our guyaberas for the wedding! He was awesome!!! The quality is stellar and the guys looked amazing.
  7. Some of you may remember that a while ago we were chosen as a feature 'REAL WEDDING' on weddingbells.ca! http://bestdestinationwedding.com/fo...ngbells-44858/ Well ladies -- the time has come!!!! Weddingbells.ca | Seaside Love | slide 1 I am hoping that with a lot of positive feedback in the comments section that we might be chosen for the print edition!!! Maybe some of you could plant the seed?!?!? This is such an exciting time for us!!!! Thanks for sharing in my excitement!!!!
  8. Our mugs were the HIT of the wedding. I think we paid @$700ish for 100 mugs. From 4imprint.ca. Everyone loved them!
  9. Jess!!! Great Planning Thread!!!! I love all your attention to detail!!!!
  10. DHL is your best bet... But the better bet is to either bring it there yourself, or find someone going there to take it with them. I send a lot of stuff to my Cuban friends using family and friends as "mules"... I would trust this FAR more than sending with DHL. You'd be surprised at how many people head to Holguin for vacations, and dropping something at the resort with your WC wouldn't be a big deal. If I was planning a trip there... I'd do it for you!
  11. I was sure to pack scissors! Everyone in the wedding party, and the parents cut theirs off. Everyone that cut theirs off, went to the front desk with the cut one in hand, and was given a new one... not a big deal. Remember to pack scissors!
  12. I only have one piece of advice. Remember to TIP -- this can be the encouragement that is needed to make your day perfect. Money talks.
  13. Very heartfelt. We are all real people, with real lives, and although our worlds collided through the happenstance of having a DW. We are all compassionate women, wedding planning may have brought us here, but it is the friendships and comradery that keep us coming back. Good Luck on your run!
  14. Great rates!!! YAY for wedding planning progress!
  15. Awesome planning thread H!!!! I can't believe the countdown is on to your big day !!! Congrats girlfriend!!!
  16. Videocamera!!!! Genius Idea! I'll make a note of taking ours with us... I hope they allow it. Holy moley Kat!!! I just noticed your ticker!!!! She is ready to join the world any day now! I can't wait to see pictures!
  17. Jenn! Welcome back to the boards!!! Congrats on your impending arrival. Margie... I love that name! Very cute! For me this week marks the end of T1, tomorrow I have another ultrasound (this is not of the ordinary, but is the result of the craziness that insued three weeks ago). We are excited for the opportunity to see the baby again.. and get another pic! I'll keep you posted. Take Care MUMMIES!
  18. That is awesome! Congratulations!
  19. Alexis! Welcome to the forum!!!! I am a very satified client of mycubanstore.com and have been advocating on your behalf for some time! Ladies, check out my planning thread! EVERYONE in the wedding party, the parents, brothers, and kids were decked out in attire from Alexis! He was awesome to deal with!
  20. Definately cheaper through the resort... but not by any means cheap. In our second week (honeymoon) we golfed. Green fees were around $90CUC (this was a 'deal' through the hotel), and club rental was $50 (or maybe $75) CUC's - this is an expensive outing when you consider that we were getting $0.63/on the CDN dollar at the time. So... for about $200+ we can say we golfed 18 at the Varadero golf course... it was fun, the scenery was gorgous, but do inform your guests to be ready to fork out some cash. PS> if you are going to rent... bring your own golf balls from home.. the ones they have at the course are ridiculously priced and crappy.
  21. We had a cigar and champagne hour... Right after the ceremony, it is Cuban tradition to have something sweet, to begin the honeymoon, this is why we had the cake right after, served along with champagne and cigars. As few of our family/friends are smokers, we opted to use the small cigarellos (purchased in town before the wedding), and brought with us (classic 70's style) box matches with our names on it. The cigar/champagne/cake reception (before the actual dinner reception) was amazing. Check out my planning thread for an idea of how it all was pulled together on a timeline. Here are some pix of the champagne/cigar reception.
  22. Thank you for all the congratulatory remarks. The H1N1 is also at the forefront of my mind. I work in an public environment, and although I do not have direct client contact, the public are still in and out of the building. At the advice of my midwife I will be getting the H1N1 flu shot. Especially since I am pregnant.
  23. Hello Ladies, I thought it was time that I checked in with the Mummas! First off, a HUGE shout out to Jenn, Mia is just gorgeous! Secondly, Danielle - I was thrilled to bits when I saw your face book page... A BOY! ! how exciting. Thirdly, Andrea! OMG 5.5 weeks! Crazy!!!! And Lastly, the reason I'm in the Mumma thread. I'd like you ladies to be the first to be in the know that I am due April 17, 2010! Trimester one is nearly over, and it isn't without a lot of drama but I am happy to be feeling fine and moving forward. In my first trimester I was having CRAZY dreams I have had a recurring (two times) dream: We go for the ultrasound, and the technician begins to laugh out loud - and hollers "you aren't pregnant!" At which point I respond, "but I went for the bloodwork, and peed on the stick!" DH then pipes up and says "the sticks are 99.9% accurate!" Then, the techincian (who has no face) says *insert diabolical tone here* YOU ARE THE POINT ONE PERCENT Then I wake up. Weird. --- and cannot sleep. These crazy dreams became the cause of the most stress I've ever felt in my life. On Sept. 17 I had an appointment with my family doctor. I expressed to her my concerns about the dreams, and my lack of sleep. She suggested that we do HCG blood tests to quell my fears. I went for blood work on Friday (1 and Monday (21). On Wednesday(23)I had a wee bit of spotting, but nothing major - I decided to call my family doc to see what the results of Friday's test was. The receptionist calmed me - with reassurance that my HCG count was +77000 and everything looked great. Thursday the 23rd was my second appointment with my midwife - she truly is amazing. I mentioned to her the HCG tests, and that she'd be cc'd on them, I mentioned the spotting on Wednesday (at which time she asked if we'd had sex -- to which we blushingly answered yes -- and she explained that this is normal, and that as long as there is no cramping etc, sometime sex can bring on a few spots. DH and I left the appointment on cloud nine! When we arrived home from the midwife (around 7:30pm) we had a voicemail from my family doctor, with instructions to call her at home. I immeadiately called, and she said she had "bad news, the counts from Monday's HCG test declined to 69000, and the baby was gone". I couldn't bear listening another minute. I handed the phone to DH. He says that the family doc went on to explain that the baby was gone, and that we could come into the clinic right away. DH was a rock, he drove to the clinic (about a half hour away from our home) - enroute to the clinic he called our midwife. She explained that we needed to DEMAND an ultrasound tonight, she doesn't trust HCG counts when pregnancy is this far along. I do not recall the drive at all. We arrived there, to my family doc's apologies, and sympathies. DH began demanding the ultrasound. The family doc was talking about a D&C, or waiting for the natural process. DH continued to demand the ultrasound. My family doc, called the ER and requested that we be seen. We then drove (another half hour to the ER). They were expecting us and took us right away. The ER doc explained that it was not his forté to use the portable ultrasound machine, but he'd do his best. Amidst, my hysterical crying I heard DH and the ER doc tell me to calm down. DH was crying. The ER doc said "I have three children of my own, and I know that there is one right there (pointing at the screen)". He went on to say that I had an emergency ultrasound scheduled for the following morning at 10am and to try and go home and rest. That night on our way home we called FIL, and MIL, to tell them we were on our way over, we went and explained everything, including our plan to tell the family. The next morning (after little sleep) we were still very anxious, we went to the ultrasound appt. To learn that the baby armadillo was there. Baby armadillo's heartbeat was calculated at 177bpm (a little high, but easily explained by mumma's hysterics). DH and I bawled. I was so relieved. Here is our little baby armadillo. Yes, it is a blob, but it's my blob! Upon leaving the ultrasound room, my family doc was there with many many apologies, and tried to explain the previous 14 hours. DH was very angry with her, and refused to speak to her. He was too upset. I accepted her apology as I felt it was heartfelt. We then went and told my parents. This is the story of our first ultrasound. We now have our second ultrasound scheduled for the 16th of October, and I am so excited to see the baby armadillo! I'll check back soon. PS> because this is a secret in my professional life, my facebook wall is off.
