Tipping Etiquette?

Recommended Posts

I know there was a thread on this previously. Most people said that they tipped WC and officiant, typically $50-100 if I remember correctly. I think you could also give your WC a gift, and that would be acceptable. We plan to tip bartenders/waiters/housekeeping even though we are at an all inclusive. Jamaica is a poor country, and I'm sure anything extra is honestly appreciated. I think you get better service if you tip as well... even though its not supposed to matter.

Photographers usually will say that they prefer a nice letter of recommendation. I would think this would go for a travel agent as well.

Anyone have thoughts on the band? Do you tip them or not, and if so, how much?

For the wedding, we tipped the WC, photographer, minister, steel band at ceremony, reggae band at reception, bartender, van and bus drivers between the resort and the reception site. Wait staff had a pretty hefty tip included in the price so I don't think we tipped extra to them.
Mo - How much did you tip the bands? We're having a steel band for our welcome party and a reggae band at the reception. Just curious...

Completely understand the need to tip a waiter making less than minimum wage in the states, and we'll definitely do that for hotel employees, at restaurants, transport, etc. ... but I'm just not sure how much is expected when you pay a big WC fee as well as they are also collecting from the vendors --- do you tip them an additional 20%? Also, the welcome dinner and reception meals include both tax AND service fees - so I wouldn't think that an additional tip is expected for them. (except if the owners are super- helpful, etc., do something above-and-beyond, etc.). What do you think?

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
