What have I learned from planning a destination wedding?

Recommended Posts

I've learned MANY MANY things, but the most important:

  • Do what you and your fiance want. Your wedding is about the two of you, and while families are important, they have way to many overbearing opinions...
  • Be accomodating, but make sure that it will make you happy too.
  • People will say there are coming, but life happens, and many won't be able to because of finances, or just bc they lied in the first place!
  • Not everyone will support your decision to have a DW but if it's what you want, DO IT!
  • You will definitely learn that during your planning process who you can count on - for me, it's been my fiance!
  • Photography is one of the most important things to have on your wedding day!
  • You have to be willing to give up some control of your wedding bc you're planning from a different location.
  • Having a travel agent is awesome!
  • Look for inspiration online and in the forum! And take your photo's with you to your destination!
  • I'm not buying real flowers for decor, only for my bouquet & his bout, I can't keep them, so I'm not paying for them!
  • The happiest day of my life will be between my fiance & I! No stress, no unwanted opinions, just us!

This is all great advice! I'm still in the planning stages and I've already learned that sometimes those closest are the ones who let you down and others who you haven't spoken much are first to book and are excited to share the day with you.

So many of my fiancee and my relationships have been changed! I've come to count on him for so much support, he's been involved so much planning and has helped to keep me sane with the friend/family issues... what a life changing experience and I'm still 9 months out!!!

Well, let's just say that our decision to have a destination wedding wasn't welcome by all.. I learned almost immediately which people in my life are truly unconditionally supportive. Those are the people that I want to be there on our special day.. Whether its ten people or a hundred.. The ones that you matter to will go above and beyond to be there for you. In the end even if it was just my fiance and I, it will still be the greatest day of my life.

I'm still a Noob, but what I have learned so far:

- How much we are loved!  My FI comes from a rather large Italian family and the people that were not invited sent us so much love instead, it was overwhelming.  People that we invited booked right away or called to say that they are honestly doing their best to make it (2 called to say they were pregnant...hahaha).

- Who said they were going to come, is coming!  I'm happy to have that support.

- FFIL has a fear we will all die if we go on the same plane and the government will get his money.  I didn't know people were actually worried about such things.  Turns out, it's a common fear in people. (And his part of the family is catching a different plane)

- When my FI says he doesn't care about details, but then talks very loudly when he doesn't like my choices, it's because he didn't even know he cared about things like colors and flowers and cakes.  HAHAHA!  Me neither!!

- How much more in love we are everyday!  I learned that FI is having a wedding at all as his gift to me because it's something I want and find important, but to him, I'm already his wife.

- That without this forum and website, I may have either pulled out my hair or eloped or gone along with above comment bc I would have gone insane :)

- Most importantly, what the other ladies have said above is true.  Stay true to you and your FI and everyone else will either follow suit or bow out.  Whether the wedding is a DW or AH, people will have an opinion no matter what.  It's only the opinion of the Bride and Groom that count!  After all, it's your ushering of a new era and no one else's so you should do it exactly the way you want and the way that represents the 2 of you!!

That's my rant for today.  Phew that felt good to get out ;)  Thanks for this thread!!!!

    • I have stayed at Dreams La Romana and Dreams Dominicus.  The two resorts are very different in style and decor. A few comparison points are below and fact sheets are attached for both.   Both resorts are approx 45 minutes from Punta Cana airport, close proximity to Saona Island, Catalina Island and Altos de Chavon. Top championship golf courses in the Caribbean are just minutes away including Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, The Links and La Estancia – all designed by world-famous Pete Dye. Restaurants are similar at both resorts.  Both offer the Explorers Club for Kids.  Dreams Dominicus  Brand new resort and in 2016 488 rooms (however additional construction was underway) More contemporary style & decor Good beach area Rooms were very nice Preferred Club located in main lobby and adjacent to main pool & beach front Food was good Center plaza area with nighttime entertainment Main lobby is small, but outdoor bar off lobby is nice Dreams La Romana Originally built in 2003 & opened as Dreams La Romana in 2008 756 rooms Recently renovated and new preferred club adults only lounge & pool added  Rooms are more traditional Caribbean decor Grounds are very lush and tropical Good beach area food was good    Dreams Dominicus fact sheet.pdf Dreams La Romana fact sheet.pdf
    • My sister has done it but with the destination wedding, only super close family members and friends came since it was expensive and farther. It was great though.
