Hi everyone. I'm new here and am in need of your wisdom! We're expecting 60+ guests at our wedding and are looking at Cancun/Mayan Riviera. We're on a super tight budget since we'll be paying for my fiances parents to attend plus 1 flight from south america. Can anyone recommend a resort for a larger group that has fewer extra costs? Most of the resorts I've looked at charge for guests above 20 ppl which is fine, but we're looking for a resort with a lower fee pp or an inclusive semi-private reception for a large group. We can't afford to pay $50-85 pp plus open bar, tables, chairs, decor etc. Please let me know if you've encountered any resorts that might work for our tight budget! Many thanks! Jessica

Good Afternoon from a Snowy Boston! Looking forward to this since i have heard rave reviews about this forum! Just got engaged in December I am looking for venue suggestions at resorts, or smaller resorts too, for a Spring 2016 Wedding for about 60-80 guests. Bahamas, BVI's, and Playa Del Carmen are places we love - have contacted many hotels and resorts, and they are all just so expensive! Don't know if its me being picky and choosing expensive places, or i had the wrong idea all along that destination was cheaper. Any suggestions to look at are much appreciated! Thank you Best, Melissa

My Visit To Azul Fives Hotel, Riviera Maya
andreaberretta posted a blog entry in Step by Step - Azul Fives Hotel 2015
Hello Brides! I had the opportunity to visit the Hotel before booking it, and I took pictures of almost everything, I'm in love with it, it is really pretty, clean and modern. I also got the opportunity to eat there and try some of the drinks and cocktails, the mojito with mango is the best !!! And the food is really really great, I highly recommend the menu I got or change it for salmon instead of meat: 1. Bisque de tomate, croton de queso de cabra al aceite de albhaca 2. Filete de res en mantequilla de vino tinto con risoto a las hierbas y zanahorias 3. Flan estilo México con caramelo y Mousse de Fresa Hope you like it!- 2 comments

Step By Step, Azul Fives Hotel 2015
andreaberretta posted a blog entry in Step by Step - Azul Fives Hotel 2015
Hello Brides! I created this blog so that I could share my love story with you, and also to help every single one of you that's getting married in the same hotel or at the beach or anything similar to mine. I'll start introducing myself. My name is Andrea and I'm 25 years old, I'll be getting married on May 1st 2015 in the Riviera Maya at Azul Fives Hotel. My fiancé's name is Jerry, also 25 years old, and we've been together for 7 and a half years now. We are from Monterrey, Mexico. We first met at a friend's party, he was a little bit wasted I'll admit, but anyways we spend all night talking and talking. The next time I saw him was at another friend's party where he asked me for my MSN messenger ID. Since then, we spend every single day talking and becoming really good friends. 9 months later I became his girlfriend. We are such best friends, we've always been 100% authentic, so we really love each other with every single flaw and every single virtue. We love spending time together and thank god, we love each other's friends also, so that makes everything easier. At the time I was finishing High School and he was starting College. We went to my prom together, I went to his , 3 years later I went to Madrid Spain for 6 months and he went and visited me for 2 weeks. Best trip ever. We celebrate each month since we've been together, every 11th day. So, at our 7th anniversary, I couldn't finish his gift (a "100 happy days" book) so I told him I rather celebrate this anniversary one month later, so that I would have time to finish my present. And that was the deal. Anyways we went to dinner and for the first time, we talked about marriage. He told me he couldn't wait any longer, he was just so worried for the money we needed and we talked everything through. We didn't said a date or a year or anything like that, just that we were now prepared to take that next step. One month later, when we were supposed to give out our presents, he took me to this restaurant in Parque Fundidora, we had dinner and when we were ready to go, he told me we should take some pictures in the gorgeous view we had up there. So we started our way to the balcony and I saw a table with 2 rose bouquets, and he told me "I think we're interrupting" so we had to make it quick. After like 3 seconds I told him "or is this for me?", he laughed and that was my "anniversary present". There was a projection in the wall and a video started, it was made by small videos of our friends congratulating us for the 7 years as a couple, and then a slideshow of pictures of him and I since we started our relationship. I'm such a cry baby that at that time, I realized I've been crying for the whole video. When the pictures ended, he appeared in the video talking to me, telling me he was so grateful for this years and for me being patient about getting married, etc. And then he started talking to me in person (by the time my mascara was so messed up by all the tears) I was sitting down and he was standing up, telling me that our time to be married was coming, and that we should be patient and wait for that moment, and then he said "or why wait any longer?" got on his knees and asked me to marry him!!!!! Of course, I bursted into tears and didn't even said yes! I was so overwhelmed and didn't expect it at all. We both are very crafty and always make detailed presents to each other, that I just never knew this was coming. THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE. We toasted with champagne and send a selfie to our family and friends to tell them the big news. March 11 2014. The next day we went to dinner with both our families, and talked about where, when and how we were going to have the wedding. I've always wanted a beach wedding so the obvious option was Cancun, the prettiest beach. 2 months later we went on a trip to Cancun, one of my best friends got married and moved there, so everything was so much easier. It is a 2 hour trip, and we stayed there for 3 days. We decided on the date because we wanted a NO LABOR DAY and May 1st is Labor Day in Mexico. So it was perfect. We were choosing between JW Marriot in Cancun or Azul Fives Hotel in the Riviera. But we decided on Azul Fives because it was All-Inclusive and that was a better place for our guests to stay. First things first, I looked for the music, the photographer and the wedding planner. Everything was easier because for the music, a friend of mine got married in Cancun and recommended a Dj called Rickalvin, so I booked him first. I preferred a DJ because my fiancé loves hip hop and electronic music, and I am more into Pop - Top Hits, so we really wanted to hear the actual song than a group that maybe won't speak english that well. The wedding planner was also an easy choice because a friend of ours works as a planner in Playa del Carmen with a company called ANHEXO. They also rent furniture, decoration and sell flower arrangements. For the photographer, that was the tough part. I'm SO not a professional photographer, but I had a class or two and I really appreciate when things are focused, with the proper light, centered, and many other little details that not everyone cares about. But they are my wedding photos, the only memory I'll have of that day forever with me. So searching in the website www.bodas.com.mx I found several photographers but they were not my style. On that website I found a link to Fearless Photographers, were I found the ones I booked Shenko Photography. They matched all of our criteria and I well a little bit out of the budget, but finally what we wanted. I'll be posting here everything I find about the suppliers, and details of the Hotel also; because I know many of you don't have the opportunity to visit Cancun before the wedding. Hope it's helpful!- 8 comments

The fiance and I are just beginning our May 2016 planning for a destination wedding in Mexico. We'll be traveling in from North Carolina and our guests will be coming in from all over (Illinois, Ohio, Texas, California). I'm on resort research overload at the moment and just want to be sure we pick the right place for us (great location, great food for an AI, luxury-ish but not too costly for our guests).... do any of you have advice on if it's best to go with a travel agent/service (like destinationweddings.com, etc.) to start planning OR just go through the resort for your planning?

Hello All! Trying to decide b/w getting married on the beach vs getting married in a Gazebo. Average temp in Cancun the day I am getting married is 81. We love the idea of on the beach, but are worried thats too warm/ uncomfortable for the guests. Who was had their wedding on the beach about that temp and what were your opinions? Thanks so much in advance!

Hi everyone, My fiancé and I are new to this site. By joining this site we hope that we can find some helpful brides or couples that will make our wedding easier to plan. Currently my fiancé and I are having major issues with our wedding coordinator Aurea. If you have worked with her before please let us know. We are trying to email her with very basic English but it seems like every question we have has been left unanswered or misunderstood. I am so stressed out, I am not sure what we are suppose to do. Our wedding is in Nov 2015. We still have a lot of time but we are already planning our wedding step by step and we are already stuck on the 2nd step because of major miscommunication and misunderstanding with our coordinator. We would love to hear some positive feedbacks, advices or suggestions from you . How was your wedding at Colonial? How are you planning your wedding at Colonial? Thank you guys so much Ana xo

Help! Destination Wedding Planning - Renaissance Aruba
lwalsek posted a blog entry in lwalsek's Blog
HELP!!! I am in the very very beginning stages of trying to plan a destination wedding. My fiance and I want to have our destination wedding on Renaissance Island through Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino. Does anyone have any tips or guidance on how to first approach planning this? My fiance really wants to get an idea of pricing before we dive in commit, but at this point, we have no idea if we'll have 10 or 50 guests. Should we get married legally in the US first? Wedding party? Is it a lot to ask people to come to your wedding that is being held out of the country and then ask people to commit to being IN the wedding? Has anyone dealt with Renaissance Aruba? Are their vendors for flowers, photography, DJ, makeup, etc., worth it? What are the pros/cons of working with a travel agent? Do you really need one? Should I try to block off rooms for my guests or give them all of the information to make their own travel arrangements? Any tips or advice on how to begin with this would be great! Laura-

Hello brides! This entry is for all of you who want to get out of the ordinary and traditional wedding stuff, and dare to be different and unique! I created a gallery album in which you can see some of the details and different kinds of things we plan for our wedding, and some examples of other brides who have done special things for the BIG day. Starting with the wedding photos, we hired Shenko Photography www.shenkophoto.com for the wedding day and the trash the dress session. We loved every picture because it's not the typicall wedding photo with everybody hugging and standing straight, the background is always so pretty and so different from anything else. They also make underwater sessions which are really cool. For the reception, we are giving out pineapple plastic cups for the guests, instead of the glass or any normal cup everyone gives out. There are also coconut cups which are really adorable for the party. Maybe it's not the most elegant but sure is the funniest. I bought them on amazon.com, but they are also at www.orientaltrading.com Also, we are making a fun experience for the guestbook, they will take a polaroid picture, hang it in a rope and sign it! Hope you like it!

Hi Brides! I'm having a beach wedding in Mexico in June, with our reception in an open air restaurant so it's going to be hot. I don't want my guests to be miserable, but I also want everyone to look nice for pictures, but I'm having trouble figuring out what the right balance is. For you beach brides, what are you asking your guests to wear? Especially men--dress pants? Shorts? Dress shoes? Sandals? I want to be able to give some guidelines since several people have already asked, because I'm afraid I'll end up with some guys melting in a suit and some guys bummin' it in shorts and a t shirt. What do you think?

Hi girls, I am done with my wedding dress (which kept me overly stressed) now it's time to think of the rehearsal dinner dress. We are having the regular dinner followed by a bonfire at the beach with cocktails. I am not sure what to wear. Go simple or go fancy ? something like illusion back ? Wear a short dress or a long dress? Please help me with ideas or posting your dress , links, I need ideas of what I will be wearing. Thank you so much!!!

Is anyone getting creative for their wedding programs, specifically a beach wedding? I am on the fence whether or not I want programs. On one hand they are nice, but they are also pricey...and people tend to toss them afterwards. Thanks!

Hi there: I am trying to gather as much information as possible to compare an off-site wedding vs resort wedding. The location I want to have my wedding is Blue Venado, but it appears that they have extremely limited decorations. I have heard of Party Planet but that's it. Can someone please let me know of any other rental companies available in the area of Blue Venado? My theme is rustic elegance. Thanks!

Our Cabo wedding was just over a week ago and I'm still floating on a cloud! Everything was perfect and in fact exceeded all my expectations! By far the most crucial part was the efforts of our Wedding Planner, Illeana Reyes-Romantic Cabo Weddings and Jose Pineda, events coordinator with the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar! We were in Cabo in November of 2013 to meet with a wedding planner I had talked with over the phone, a well known, high-end planner; well, I cannot tell you how disappointed we were upon meeting her, and how unprofessional her staff was. Lucky for us, we became friendly with a musician at Hacienda Del Mar, and while chatting it up with him we discovered his wife, Illeana, was a wedding planner! Illeana knows her stuff and she works tirelessly to make everything perfect and she is literally there with you every step of the way! We were completely and utterly happy with all her recommended vendors......Blanc Bridal Salon for hair and make-up, Gilda Badillo-photography, Florenta Florist for flowers, the Mariachis, the cigar roller, Impala Cabo-transportation, Picante-fishing charter, Rissaleana-sunset dinner cruise, etc.....with regard to the Hacienda Del Mar(we are timeshare owners there and our guest stayed at the hotel); truly amazing how perfect everything was in just under 2 months after Hurrican Odile hit......truly amazing! Jose Pineda work closely with us to make everything perfect and just the way we wanted it! Honestly, it's not easy to exceed my expectations, but I am still pinching myself.........my fairytale wedding was made a reality!!! I cannot thank Illeana and Jose enough!! Oh, and of course I need to mention Daryl, Illeana husband, who is a wonderful muscian, who performed at our wedding and well into the night at our after party/bonfire on the beach.......he's awesome, but she doesn't get credit for him, because we found him first!

We are from the US and we decided to have our wedding in Cabo at Pueblo Bonito. The experience was beyond AMAZING! Our wedding planner, Denise Acosta, was wonderful! The hotel was clean, beautiful, and created a relaxing paradise for our guests. Everyone who stayed raved about how amazing the place was which was important to us because it was a long trip for many of them. The hotel was so accommodating to our needs and the entire staff went out of their way to make our guests and us feel taken care of and special. The big day truly went without error, which I am told can be quite rare. I am a very detail oriented person and Denise made sure all of the little details of the wedding were in place and that schedule was kept. Our wedding was on the beach- which was gorgeous. We had a cocktail hour at the firepit and a private dinner reception by the pool with dj Arturo Ortiz. He was fabulous and played all our requests as well as great dance music. Everyone had a blast and the event felt very private. People at the resort thanked us the day after the wedding for picking such a great dj because they were able to enjoy his music from the distance- which was funny. The food was absolutely amazing and far exceeds any typical wedding food or resort food. Overall, it was the perfect experience. I am grateful to the hotel for a breathtaking wedding and a great experience! Five stars out of five!

Hi I am planning a wedding for January 2015 that is very small (35 people) at a house we rented and am struggling to find cost effective vendors. I am looking for fresh flowers (a bridal bouquet and loose roses and succulents for DIY center pieces) and am getting quoted what seems like exorbitant rates ($750). Are my expectations unreasonable or does anyone know of better options? I would be happy to just find a vendor and DIY the bouquet as well. Driving to Cabo and back (2 hours) is out of the question the day of the wedding. Also, does anyone have experience with caterers in or around Los Barriles? I have paid a coordinator to help connect with vendors, but so far am not impressed with the quotes. She keeps mentioning people she has asked to reserve the date by first name, but doesn't provide full contact info or a quote. Finally, what should I expect to pay for rentals (tables, chairs, linens, dishware)? Thank you in advance for your help! Jesi

I thought I'd post this since I know how frustrating it was when I was planning and I couldn't get the info I needed. Hopefully this will help someone planning their wedding in Manuel Antonio. We wanted a beach wedding and I was hoping one of the hotels, Costa Verde to be exact, could help us in planning it. I wanted everything on the beach, including the reception. That's where the problem lies. Most of these hotels in Manuel Antonio could arrange for your ceremony at the beach but will not do the reception on the beach. I also didn't want a cookie cutter wedding (pre-made packages) so here's what we ended up doing for 50 guests. Planner: Marika in Costa Rica. She is the cheapest so know what you're getting when you're paying less. All our communication have been good, she is always available through email and phone. At the end of it, I realized I could've just hired a day-of-wedding coordinator instead of a planner but Marika's biggest role was to get me the villa I wanted, the vendors I neeeded, for the budget I had. We would not have been able to get the villa without her since we didn't meet the 5-night minimum, she ended up talking with the owner and the owner agreed. Now the bad part: Marika was drunk (according to my mom) during our ceremony. She wasn't of any help when it came to organizing the entrance of the wedding party, she placed the mason jars on the dining tables when they should have been on the drinks table, then quickly left. She left her assistant all by herself to help us. She also did not help with setting up the sky lanterns when I already told her about them. I will take some blame as I should have planned better but in reality, when you're hiring a planner, the planner is supposed to help you with things you may have missed. That's the whole point! Oh well. They later told me she had to leave because she had to go to her husband who was in the hospital but I'm not quite sure if that's true. Also, she should've at least hired someone else to replace her if she had to leave. Her assistant was ok, but she seemed clueless as well. Anyways, I was prepared that things are not always gonna go as planned so I didn't let all that stress me. My mom was stressing, I wasn't. Venue: Discovery Beach House Like I said, they do have a minimum stay requirement which increased the cost considerably. I'm just so happy that Evelyn and her husband were very accomodating and they gave us an experience that was truly amazing. Had I known ahead of time, we would've booked all 5 nights just because we loved the villa so much. but we had a budget and we had a schedule so we had to focus. hehe. Do I recommend this place? ABSOLUTELY yes! there's not very many beach front properties in Manuel Antonio so this place is an absolute gem. Guests: Most of our guests stayed at Costa Verde. It is closest to the discovery beach house. The rooms are large and the VIEWS were amazing. Some opted to stay at other cheaper hotels and they all seemed to like it. A few stayed in Quepos but I highly discourage this as it's still a drive to get to MA from Quepos. Quepos has a large grocery store where we bough most of our needs (cheaper compared to MA). Caterer: Desiree (who also happens to be the main chef at Discovery) Chef Des cooked the most amazing meal for us. Everyone enjoyed the food that when they see me or when they see our photos from the wedding, someone always mentions how good the food was. Chef Des worked with me on the menu and she pretty much catered to what I wanted. The prices were reasonable and she also provided the servers, the plates and silverware. I also asked her if we could just have an open bar where people served themselves and she helped me do it. We bought beer and placed them in metal buckets (costa mesa rentals) with ice. and cacique and juice mix from the local grocery store that we placed in rented out jars (costa mesa rentals). we never ran out of alcohol. Saved $$$! Cake: Chelsea from mariposa - We got an almond cake decorated with the same succulents that were in my bouquet. Absolutely amazing cake! We also served the cake for dessert, along with fruits and coffee and tea. Rentals: Costa Mesa Rentals Tables, chairs, lights, linens - they are from San Jose so there's an extra cost for the delivery but there are not a lot of companies who offer bamboo chairs. Music: JOshua Wilson - fair price and he provided music for the ceremony, cocktails, and reception. Flowers: Costa Brava FLowers, Carol Bikker - bouquet, boutonniere, natural arch for our ceremony and the centerpieces. They were all lovely. Too bad we couldn't take the centerpieces home with us. Hair and Make up: Priscilla for my hair - she's great! Melania for my make-up - she's amazing! They were both great! They both worked on me at the same time and Melania is pretty good at making me look good without using too much. She knows what products work in the tropical weather and my make up lasted til the wee hours of the morning. Photos and video: El Velo - I posted on another person's thread about El Velo. All our photos were fantastic but it's now 7 months after our wedding and we still haven't received our video. They said it will be mailed this week or next. We'll see. I also hired Jennifer Harter for my trash the dress photo shoot. Favors: Ordered custom burlap bags here in the US and transported them to CR. When we got there, we bought bags and bags of coffee beans from the local walmart and started filling the burlap bags. they smelled great! We also wanted to give gift bags to our guests so I ordered canvas bags here in the US (about $0.50 each) and filled them with costa rican chips (plantain and potato), juice, water, and some candies. Bought all of those at walmart as well when we arrived in San Jose. We placed maps and itineraries inside the bags so our guests can see what the schedule was like for days leading up to the wedding. Shuttles: We hired shuttles to pick up our guests from their respective hotels on the actual day of the wedding. Discovery Concierge: Sabrina is amazing. she helped me hire the shuttles and also helped with planning some tours for our guests. Overall, there were some things I could have done differently but in the end, our wedding was perfect in my eyes. Our guests had fun and my husband and I had a truly unforgettable experience. To this day, we still talk about it like it was yesterday. The best gift is to see our families and friends happily experience Costa Rica the way we wanted them to: through adventure and food. It was grand. I've attached some photos.
