At Home Reception - Decorating Ideas
jmhein replied to jmhein's topic in General Wedding Planning Information
Everything looks and sounds great Lorilou!! A Mexican theme is much more fun than a Jamaican theme! But I think I can work with it! -
They serve rum punch for free to all wedding guests after the ceremony at the Riu Ocho Rios! So that's a tradition I'll be incorporating!

Hi ladies, Have any of you had an at home reception or are planning one? We have rented a hall for a couple of months after our wedding (it will be the dead of winter in February in Northern Alberta when we get back from Jamaica, so it's better to wait until April for a party! Trust me... ) Anyway, we want to show the DVD of our wedding, do a photo slide show, have a DJ and dance the night away!! We'll have a cold buffet, a chocolate fountain, and favours for the guests as well. I anticipate about 100 people. Does anyone have any ideas for decorating with the beach theme? I would love to see pics of your AHR or any ideas you have! Thanks so much!

They had a goat and a pig roasting, bread fruit, over proof rum and rice. They set up music outside, blocked the street off with tables and they gave us a traditional jamaican style reception. It was very interesting and very sad at the same time. Sad because of how some people have to live but they make the best of it. I fell in love with some of the children and I actually want to find a way to mail gifts to these kids. Everyone in the neigborhood just showed up. They didnt know who we were, but they welcomed us with open arms. And when they told me how the groom gives the bride the cake I didnt want to do that and I said Ewww they insisted and it wasnt as bad as I thought. That sounds really, really wonderful! Sweet, touching... what a memorable experience for you guys!! I think it's always a must-do to get a real taste of the culture when you travel to another country. I bet you will remember that always as your "Real" taste of Jamaica!!

Thanks for the suggestions Mora, those are both really pretty updos! The Greek style... not so much.. LOL! Not for a wedding anyway! I wish I could shrink my photos, I hate looking at my shiny forehead in MEGA size!! My dress is by Venus Bridals, here is a pic of the original dress, but the store I bought it from altered the back. They had it that way already when I tried it on, and I just loved the lace up back! -
This is VERY Cool!! I am excited I might get to meet Therese and JamaicaBride08 while I'm there! Ladies, we should arrange a meeting or wear name tags or something! I also know Pouchie isnt on the list yet but she's another February bride!!

At Home Reception Ideas Needed
jmhein replied to CluelessBride's topic in General Wedding Planning Information
I'm so glad I found this thread! I am dealing with the same questions right now. Our wedding is in February and we are doing our AHR in April. (Better weather in Northern Alberta in April so more of a chance some people will travel a couple of hours to make it!) We just booked a hall for April 19th and we meet with the hall coordinators this Wednesday! AAGH! And I haven't put much thought into this! We want to have a fun party for all of our friends who couldnt make it. I also want to wear my dress again (tee hee!) and show the DVD of our wedding. We plan on just doing a cold buffet at some point, showing the DVD, thanking everyone for coming, and then cranking the music and dancing the night away! I dont have a clue what order to do things in, how do we ensure people come at the start? Do we serve the cold buffet at the beginning of the evening, and THEN show the DVD, and then dance? Or do we show the DVD, dance and have a midnight buffet? I dont know what will work best and I want everyone to just have a good time and be happy to be there! Any suggestions for timing of everything are welcome! p.s. Dragonfly, I totally think you can do an AHR in December!! Let us know if you do! -
Hi ladies, I am STILL struggling with what kind of hairstyle to go with! I like the idea of a loose curly updo with flowers in my hair, but I cant really find any pictures I like.... I also think my dress has kind of a Greek goddess look to it maybe? And if that's the case, how do Greek goddesses do their hair? LOL! Here's a pic of the dress, suggestions welcome, thanks ladies! SORRY for the honkin' big pictures, grrrr!!!

Flowers, Photographer Riu OR

For those of you who ARE going with Michael as your photographer... did you book him in advance? I am just going with the free package and adding my upgrades from there, so I emailed him asking if I could book him now to appear at my Feb 12 wedding, and this was his response: Hello Janelle, You don´t really need to book but if you want to, we would make a remote credit card charge and you would have booked by this then. Let me know! Kind regards Michael Ummm..... I'm confused!! Do I have to book or will he just appear anyway? I dont really want to have him charge my credit card already! And he doesnt mention WHAT the credit card charge amount would be? Anyone else have any insight into this? I emailed him back asking what the amount of the charge would be and have received no response... been a couple of weeks now... -
Hey Julia, Since you're in Ottawa, I assume you're flying Sunquest? Since it's the only Canadian tour operator that goes to the Riu's? For my February 2008 wedding, flying out of Calgary, we are paying $1970 + 262.90 taxes. So your quote is in line with that, but flying out of Ontario... I think you should get a slightly better rate!

YAY! Thanks for starting this post Heidi! I am Feb 12, 2008

We should start a post that is a running list of all Riu Ocho Rios brides and their dates, so we can all keep track!

Hi! Sorry, this is a bit off topic, but since those orchids on the cake are free, do you know if they would provide them for a bride's hair for free as well? I really want orchids in my hair!

Travel Mugs as Favours
jmhein replied to jmhein's topic in Wedding Registry, Wedding Gift Bags, and OOT bags
I think I will see how much Discount Mugs charges to ship samples to Canada, if it's still fairly reasonable I will order some samples from there, there are 2 or 3 styles I really like! I can get them with the white imprint area and then Aqua blue writing which would be my colours! Hooray! If Samples arent an option for me I am just going to decide on one and order soon! I will post pics once I have them! -
We are back!! And it was awsome!!
jmhein replied to Jerzzygirl's topic in Destination Weddings in Jamaica
JERZZYGIRL!!! YAYYYY!! Welcome back! I am SO glad your wedding day went so wonderfully for you! I just got through all of your pictures and they look just gorgeous! You were a beautiful bride! All your guests look like they had a blast too which is great to see!!! I am so glad you had such a good experience with Chandlyn. Wow, I saw the pic of you and her and is she ever pretty!! You gave such a detailed review, thank you so much! Did you have your dinner at Mammee Bay or at The Plantation? Everything looked so wonderful! I am so glad you had such a great time! -

I'm really really sorry to hear this Heidi.

Oh yayyyy! You're there already probably having an AMAZING time and enjoying the hot sun and the white beach! Have a wonderful wedding and wonderful time!!
-
wow! I would be annoyed at the short notice. I mean, you were planning for this for MONTHS and they had to know that and all the planning that goes with it! Did you buy gifts for your guests and do you have enough for them as well? You'll have to make sure the WC can arrange to add space for them at your wedding dinner as well... but, the bright side is they ARE coming, and it sounds like it was a big deal for them to make that decision. I am sure you will have a wonderful, magical wedding, and as the other ladies have said, DONT go to any extra stress for them, just relax and enjoy!
