So true... I once knew a couple who gave each other an engagement rug. LOL.

Sounds like exactly what happened to us! We bought a house and I told him that he might as well propose then b/c he was stuck w/ me the moment we signed the papers. He actually did buy a ring w/o me knowing about it so that was good, and it didnt' take nearly as long as I orginally thought it was going to. Long story short, I had half of our wedding planned (date, location, everything) w/o a ring. Sometimes boys just take a while to get the hint.

As much as I was loving being a part of this thread (ringless ladies) - I have to say Im even happier now that things have changed for me.......I'm ENGAGED!!!!
He finally proposed last night!!!! So excited and surprised...I had no idea!
So glad it finally happened - now I feel like I really can plan the wedding.

Dont worry ladies - your rings are on their way - I have been planning for over 9 months without a ring ....and there is nothing wrong with that!

Just wanted to share bc I was so excited - but I feel everyone's pain from experience....
Excited to see who is next!!!

Totally agree with carolina24 and jealousy 88. you should have a proper moment/story (for yourself). no one is saying the ring has to cost as much as a down payment on a house (that is totally unnecessary). i think if you need a ring and a story, which obviously you do theres an entire thread devoted to it, he should do his best to give it to you. just my 2 cents

I think to some extent you just have to let FI do it in his own time. FI and I were living together for over 2 1/2 years, had bought a house together, car together, had joint bank accounts, etc. before he proposed. I knew we both wanted to get married but I didn't know when he would propose. Back in 2007, FI even had me send him pictures of rings I liked so he would have an idea. In late 2008, FI had told me he would propose before my next birthday (June 2009). Well I took him at his word and was so devastated when my birthday came and still no proposal. FI and I even went ring shopping together last fall and I tried on rings and fell in love with one. By then, I really didn't think anything of it, figured we were going to be one of those couples who dated forever with no proposal. Then suddenly, when I did not expect it at all, Christmas 2009 FI proposed and it was perfect and amazing.

The thing was, the proposal was really important to FI. More important to him than I think to me even. He wanted it to be perfect and he wanted the ring to be a serious investment. I always told FI get me a cheap ring, I don't care. But to FI, he wanted the ring to be really significant. His philosophy was he was only going to do this once, he wanted it to be something I was proud to wear the rest of my life and something that was really meaningful. So all that time, he was saving up so he could buy me "the ring". In hindsight, as much as I said I don't care, get me a cheap ring, I am so glad he didn't. I love love my ring and more than that, I love how much effort and thought he put into it. I wouldn't change one thing about my proposal.

So I would say, don't rush him. Make it clear that its what you want and then let him do it his way.

Cindy is exactly right - The more I mentioned it, I think the more he pulled away from the idea - bc then the "idea" was no longer his. He wanted to do it in his time - and his time only - and not before. They know how much it means to us, and for that reason, they also want to make sure its special and that it is when you least expect it.
                  It will happen, be patient.....
