I'm hoping to either go to city hall the day before we get on the plane or the morning of.

I really like the having it done in the airport on our way out though, I have a friend who is ordained so maybe I can see if she'll make a quick trip to the airport the morning of for us!

We already did ours :) and we aren't telling anybody. Our friend is the officiant for our DW, and is legal to do it, so no one even suspects (he is the only person who knows we're really already married).

We just went to city hall while we were out of town for work (we happened to have coinciding work conferences in the same area). It was funny - we filled out the paperwork (we actually got comments that we were one of the only ones to fill it out correctly - which was a little scary but then again we did seem to be about 10 years older than everyone else in there) and went down the hall to this tiny room with no windows, horrible lighting, and all of these really cheesy pictures and hallmark quotes on the wall with fake gold frames (I'm sure you can imagine). The women had something stuck in her teeth and halfway through stopped to pick it out (I'm not kidding - we could barely keep from laughing out loud). But she was really enthusiastic! We were so unprepared we didn't even have a ring - I took my engagement ring off (which I still had on) and then he put it back on. Anyway, the whole thing was such a random and funny memory and we like that's it's just our own.

My FI and I are doing a small courthouse ceremony a week or two before we hop on the plane. I didn't even think about the passport situation, but glad to know I won't have to take care of all of that until after we get back!! I think we are just inviting our parents and not telling any of our guests. We want to make sure that our ceremony in Mexico is really special for us and our guests!

For those of you who got legally married at the courthouse, how did it go? Where there a bunch of people waiting in line, were there people in the room with you? Did you need to bring a witness? We are going to the legal stuff when we get home...my parents want to make a big do to out this but we want to keep it between the two of us and then maybe go out for cocktails after. I am curious...I have this image in my head that it will be like the Sex and the City Movie with Carrie and Big..is it really like that?

I think it's different everywhere. Here we had to get a marriage commisioner so we went to her house signed the paperwork and stepped out on the beach to say our vows. It was just us and 2 witnesses and that was that.

We went to the license application room first - there were a few other people there filling out applications too. It was your typical govt type of waiting office. Once that was approved and we paid (!), we went to a private room for the "ceremony." It was just us and the clerk. We didn't need any witnesses, but that varies by state so you'll have to check for your state. (It also varies if you can just do it all at once like that, or if there is a waiting period between getting the license and actually getting married, and whether you need blood work done (we didn't)). I had a friend get married in Nevada at the city hall (in Vegas of all places!) and they had to have a witness. But she said lots of people just used the next couple waiting as the witness (if they didn't anyone else with them).

We went and had cocktails after too. It was fun having this kind of experience to contrast with our more formal wedding.

That's exactly our thoughts too! It will just be Paperwork, Paperwork, Paperwork!!! Mexico will be the real deal! We will do the "renewal of vows" ceremony ($1000 cheaper than legal) and our guests will have NO idea. We've already asked the judge in Mexico to send over the vows and they are almost exact as the real vows.

Easy as pie!!! Yum! smile29.gif

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
