Ok, so I was posting on another thread about Facebook and how my grandmother found out through my aunt who found out through facebook that I was engaged.

My FI and I couldn't wait to get on Facebook to tell the world that we were engaged (you can change your status and it notifies all your friends!). The only thing is that we didn't tell all of the family first...so it upset some of my family members...

So...ladies, did you change your status on FB right away after your engagement? or did you wait till all the appropriate parties knew?

I waited to notify those closest to me first and actually removed wall posts congratulating me in order to avoid having close relatives from finding out before I could call them.

However, everyone communicates differently and if announcing through FB was your preferred way of telling people, then they just have to deal w/ it!

I waited too - I wanted my parents, close family and friends to know first ....not all the randoms I went to high school with and barely talk to anymore! To each their own though. This is the day and age of technology!

We waited too. I personally told the people closest to us and asked them no to say anything UNTIL they saw it on Facebook. This worked really well. Once we spoke to the necessary people we proceeded with the Facebook update and all those who already knew used that as a queue to share the news with people not on Facebook.

When I got engaged I didn't have FB! But I would definitely have waited until I told my closest friends & family before I announce it to the cyber world! You have to put yourself in their shoes...would you want to find out from FB (or worse, from someone else who say it on FB) that your best friend/close cousin/sister/etc was engaged?? Probably not!

Have you talked to your grandma about this?? I think you should. Just let her know that you were so excited to be engaged that you wanted to tell the whole world how happy you were & FB was the only way you could think of to do that! And also tell her your sorry for not telling her first.

Well, our mothers were there. My brother was there and his brother already knew. On the way home, I called my closest cousins and closest friends and then I immediately posted it on FB. However, my mom is one of 14 and my family is HUGE! There is no way that I could call everyone so FB was my way of telling them.

My FI didn't tell his closest cousin and she found out on FB. LOL! She called his mom and was like umm....I read on FB that....My FMIL said, "She put that on FB" His cousin's reply was, "Yeah, that's what it's for." LOL! I love it.

I do, however, think that you may have considered waiting to post until you told those who you wanted to tell directly. Just apologize to your grandmother. Let her know that it meant a lot to you to tell her face to face and that's why she didn't know yet. I hope everything works out. Keep us posted!

Well it worked out that the weekend we got engaged we were driving down to have dinner at my sister's and all of my family from AZ was in, so I gathered everyone and announced it at once. Of course all of his family knew, but as for extended family on each side I don't think that part is necessary. Then when we got home I sent out a fb message to our closest friends to notify them of the news, and then changed my status. I guess we waited but majority of our close friends live far away so fb was really the best way to tell them all since I hate being on the phone.

We called everyone we wanted to know but in the middle of the phone calls my best friend's fiance (I had JUST called my best friend) posted something on our wall about it. Since we weren't near a computer when it happened, it came to my blackberry and we finished the REALLY important calls (aunts, uncles, grandparents) and just posted it. If he hadn't given us away on there, we would have waited until we were done making all the important phone calls. We got through most of them before it happened.

My grandmother would have felt hurt and out of the loop so we thought it best to let them know.

Isn't modern technology wonderful? And instead of people being happy for you, they're mad at you for how they found out!

I'm not connected to many family members on Facebook so I didn't have that kind of drama.

I took a picture of my ring with my phone and texted it to a bunch of my friends first, and then called the people that didn't text. My parents were actually out of the country and didn't find out till the next day.
