I personally think STDs are the same as an invite (for a DW anyway). I mean, you wouldn't send an STD to some random person so obiously the people that recieve them are invited to the wedding.

Save yourself the money and put it towards your wedding in another way. :)

I thought the exact same thing, until I realized some people who got the Save the Date didn't bother to check the website to know they had to put a deposit down to save the rate...
I spent all last night frantically making invites (which I think turned out ok- thanks to the threads on here for the help!) in order to get them out quickly as our deadline is only 2 1/2 weeks away.

I still think STD is the way to go, but don't do what I did (just put the website address on and assume ppl will check it)... make sure you include information that tells the guests to go to the website, or a blurb to say when and where to book!

I understand your dilemma, but IMO invitations are a must! We sent out Save the Dates, then a year later we sent out an email with booking information and rates, since the group rates were only good for 2 weeks. We mentioned that a formal invitation would follow, and we sent those out shortly afterwards, but didnt' bother with RSVP cards or inserts (which saved us $$).

We chose to do STD but not formal invitations. We are only having 15 guests (mostly all immediate family and close friends) and set up a web site. We chose not to do formal invites as everyone we want there has already told us they are coming. We thought it would just be another expense we didn't need.

I thought invitations would be silly since I correspond with everyone so much through email, phone and in person. I'm just going to save the money for cute welcome cards, passports or guest gifts.

Man I wish cardstock wasn't so expensive, lol.

I'm not doing a formal invite either. Im sending out STD soon (as my wedding is close to yours 4/23/11) and plan on sending out a little newsletter around the time invitations are out. I, however, have a wedding website where people can RSVP. I did see someone's response above that said people didn't go to the website, but I think in this day and age, everyone 1. forgets about the invite 2. looses it or 3. didn't remember to send the RSVP in the first place (with a formal invite). Almost everyone is online these days, and I think that's the best way to reach people. So, this is what I'm doing...hope it works for you as well...Good luck!

Just a WARNING for those relying on people to RSVP on a website. For whatever reason, some people don't notice the website and don't go. So if you are not sending the invite, make sure that you call everyone and they know to go to the website. I had phone calls from people who didn't even notice the website address on the STD, asking me about the wedding details that were already on the website so I sent out the formal invitations. I would hate for any of your guests to not come due to lack of paying attention to the website.

some places you can change the wording on the STD to "for more information & to RSVP" that's what we did on our STD. Hopefully it helps with the confusion!

I ended up sending out formal invites, but I almost didn't because we already knew who was coming and most of them had already booked! But I found cute ones for a good deal and decided to use them so I could have a keepsake :) I don't think it's tacky if you don't...it's up to you!

That is exactly the dilemma I just went through, and quickly made up DIY invites to send out that very easily spelled out they needed to book and RSVP.
