That's clever. I'd be worried about when the gift giver comes to visit though. A lot of people want to see that their present is being put to good use and might be offended if you returned it or aren't using it.

You can also register at Home Depot!

Prairiegirl, I just found out about MyRegistry.com - All Stores One Registry ®, where you can set up a registry including cash gifts!!! I am exactly in the same position as yourself, both of us being in our mid-30's and now having a duplicate of every kitchen appliance, piece of furniture, etc... one can possibly think of! We would like cash to put toward a downpayment on a house, and through this web site I believe that it will be possible.

I'm with the other girls, I don't know that there is a way to ask for cash. You could try to do a registry that has cash gifts. We have alot of things, but would like to upgrade so we are doing a registry mostly for our AHR guests to use. I don't have the heart to ask for cash, if I did ask for cash it would have to be for a downpayment on a house. I couldn't ask for cash to pay for a wedding or AHR, it would feel like I shouldn't be having it if i can't pay for it.

I have to agree too, that alot of people may get you a gift they think you need, or a gift card (which can't be redeemed for cash) if you didn't have registry. I think people feel like if they give cash it isn't going to something you really need so its a waste.

I would have your party spread the word, only if a guest were to ask what you wanted, or try the myregistry.com.

You could register at Honeyfund.com : it's really cash going on your bank account, and you can add to the registry stuff for your wedding, too. Actually, in the little demo they show, you start by selecting the wedding stuff not yet paid for (I think). The only fee is the paypal fee (3.5%).

Otherwise I'm using travelers joy, and basically it's the same : you write what you want, you put the pics you want, so if you want flowers or liquor for your party just add it there with a pic and that's it. It can really be anything as the fields are blank, and you can upload your own pics or pics you just googled. It's a bit more expensive (7.5%).

In the same boat with the same concerns: have two households, do not need another toaster, have not registered anywhere, would prefer monetary gifts, having mother spread the word about cash, concerned that guests will then give us things we don't need or like....glad to know that there are other brides who have not registered either, who have the same questions.

We've decided to have the word spread and be thankful for any envelopes or toasters that come our way. I also think it helps if people know what your plans are for the money: planning to buy a new house, new bedroom set, new couches. They might feel better knowing that they are not paying for a month of pizza and pedicures!

bed bath has wised up and now requires all returns to have a gift receipt in order to get cash...

Hey, newlyweds need pizza and pedicures too!

I think one of the problems people have with cash is that it's very transparent what the gift cost. Especially for people who are unable to gift something expensive, a non-cash gift is a better way to hide the price tag. However, it's not as if people don't know how much things they registered for cost anyway!

I think what we'll do is register for a couple things at Target and hopefully when the items are gone, people will gift cash or gift cards to Target. Since we do a monthly shopping trip there for our pantry supplies (boo that we don't have a Super Target with groceries!), Target gift cards are as good as cash in my eyes. You could do the same with any store that you shop at frequently. Instead of paying $200 towards groceries/gas/clothes/whatever, use your gift card and then put that $200 towards wedding bills instead.

    • I have stayed at Dreams La Romana and Dreams Dominicus.  The two resorts are very different in style and decor. A few comparison points are below and fact sheets are attached for both.   Both resorts are approx 45 minutes from Punta Cana airport, close proximity to Saona Island, Catalina Island and Altos de Chavon. Top championship golf courses in the Caribbean are just minutes away including Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, The Links and La Estancia – all designed by world-famous Pete Dye. Restaurants are similar at both resorts.  Both offer the Explorers Club for Kids.  Dreams Dominicus  Brand new resort and in 2016 488 rooms (however additional construction was underway) More contemporary style & decor Good beach area Rooms were very nice Preferred Club located in main lobby and adjacent to main pool & beach front Food was good Center plaza area with nighttime entertainment Main lobby is small, but outdoor bar off lobby is nice Dreams La Romana Originally built in 2003 & opened as Dreams La Romana in 2008 756 rooms Recently renovated and new preferred club adults only lounge & pool added  Rooms are more traditional Caribbean decor Grounds are very lush and tropical Good beach area food was good    Dreams Dominicus fact sheet.pdf Dreams La Romana fact sheet.pdf
    • My sister has done it but with the destination wedding, only super close family members and friends came since it was expensive and farther. It was great though.
