that said, wow it is so weird for me to see this old post resurface (because i'm the original poster)! i am now happily married and it actually turned out that pretty much everyone ended up coming (all the important family at least)! it was crazy because we ended up with 33 people despite all the early drama (and even despite the swine flu!). back when i posted this thread, i would have never imagined our wedding could turn out the way it did.
not everyone is as fortunate. sometimes, lots of people bail on you for real. all you can do is resolve to cherish those who DO come! the rest are missing out and that's their bad!

We are going in with the attitude that no one but our parents will come, anything more is a bonus! All that matters is that you and your soon to be husband are doing what you both want, you can always celebrate with everyone who couldn't make it when you get back home!!
Hope things work out for you guys!!

Now that the final count is nearly in (6 adults and NO small children) I wished we had planned it in Hawaii, like I wanted. But all those traveling balked at the 12 hr flight.
The absolute worst is my FSIL who's husband makes over 150k a year, has been on 4 vacations since we announced this destination wedding a year ago. She has decided she "can't afford it" and now will miss her ony siblings wedding. If only they realized how stupid they look posting on facebook how their latest purchases, vacations, cars ect...cost $$$$. What a joke!

We never had illusions about having a really large number of guest joining us, but we sent out about 50 invitations anyway (some to people who we already knew were not going to be coming just to keep up appearances and be polite), and as it appears, we will only have 10 guests total joining us -- could be worse though, right?
The only must-attend guests in my mind from the start were both sets of our parents, and they were right along with us when we booked, so after that, everyone else was a blessing! We just keep having to reminding ourselves that those that can't attend our wedding in Jamaica will be there to celebrate with us when we have our AHR 3 months after we return!

But I am sure no matter how many people attend your wedding in May, it will be wonderful!
