Changing your name

Recommended Posts

BOth my FI and I have complicated french last names, so it is not like it will get any easier! lol

And we are making it harder by hypenating it!

That's right I am a lucky girl, he is taking my name too! I love him so much more for it

This has been a topic of discussion in our house. Currently I share a last name with a certain quarterback of the NE Patriots, as well as a 70's tv family (not to mention the EXACT same name as a soap opera character!), so it would be nice to have a name with no pop culture references. That said, I would like to hyphenate. Maybe I'm just lazy, but really, my name (nickname that I go by) is Sam... and my FI's last name rhymes. Sam Pham. Yet another source of comedic interpretation! I figure it's a game time decision... rofl.gif

I'm torn. I am 37 and attorney with a lot of assets and it will be a pain in the butt to change everything at this stage of my life. That said I have no desire to keep my fathers name for various reasons that I'll spare you guys. I'd be going from Williams to Johnson....both common names so hyphenating those seems silly. He doesn't care. Also it is kind of stereotyped that as a female lawyer that I don't cook, don't want kids, work all night and don't take care of home or do typical 'wifely' things and that female lawyers are these "ball busting" (not my term) career women and for many not the "cater to you" wife material that some seek. I've faced those stereotypes my whole dating life from certain types of men and hyphenating my name or not taking his is kind of what they'd expect and falls right in line with the stereotype so I kind of find myself also wanting to change it just to not play into that. I've already gotten the look of shock from male colleagues (all of who have stay at home wives) like wow you are actually going to change your name to his. So right now I am planning to do it but still am not totally sure. The though of all the paperwork is daunting. If I did not own a lot of assets and had not had a long professional career it would be easier. I have power of attorney documents for family members that I guess I'll have to change. There is so much to consider.

I am in a similar boat except my assets are pretty slim lol I'm not changing my name basically I don't want to but clients are fickle to start with get a new name and they think you aren't the same person lol

So mine is staying at this point, if we have kids I might change my mind but at the min i'm firm at no change. Colleagues can think what they like lol if they think i'm a ball breaker it suits me as they stay right out of my way lol

I'm tacking his name on to mine without hyphenating. I love my last name (its a very easy, no need to spell it out "West") and he has a french canadian, often misspelled last name of Larue so my name will be Lindsay Ann West Larue and I will slowly convert West into a middle name over time and at my own pace. It is important that my kids and I have the same last name since my mom and I have never had the same last name. My plan is that when we have kids, that they will also have West for a middle name and we can share it that way. I think that eventually I will get used to being Lindsay Larue, but for now the plan is to take it slow....

I have always thought that I would hyphen our names together...but I am liking what some of the others had to say about making my last name like a middle name and adding his with no hyphen...

Now I need to think a little more about ...but definitely my last name will stay somewhere.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
