How much are alterations??

I paid $100.00 at David's Bridal. $65 to let it out and $35.00 for the bustle.

A local seamstress is doing my alterations. She's shortening the straps, taking in the sides and back, and adding a bustle to match the cascading details in the back. It's costing me $150 because of the time it takes to undo and redo the beading.

My bridal shop is charging $350 flat fee for alterations; I am wondering now if I should try to find a seamstress but I am scared.

I got my dress at Nicole Millers $1400. Alterations were $155 to sow in a bra, remove the bone of dress since it was too big, take in waist and hem the dress.

I found a great local seamstress who is removing the lining from the train of my dress so it's just lace and taking up the hemline of the lining as well in the front so that more lace shows on it's own, taking in the bust (because I, apparently, have no boobs) and adding a small loop and button to gather the lace train up in the back for the evening.

 

She's doing it all for $130 ... and I only have to pay 1/2 up front in case I'm not pleased with her work in a month's time when I check in!

Wow...it cost me $380 (+tax, so actuall $411) for all my alterations...bringing in, hem, and adding a "toga" strap)...so my total dress cost was around $1200

My dress was $500 from David's and the alterations were about $230.

 

I did need a good amount of alterations though- Hem, bustle, taken in on the sides and i needed cups added and the halter top shortened. but i thought that was a fair price to change almost all the seams on the dress- LOL- too bad short and nothing ever fits right! I did have my last fitting last night and it's perfect!

my alterations are $220 or $240 I think, and I am getting a hem, a french bustle, and everything above the hips taken in. It's a pretty simple dress (no beading or lace to deal with) but it's a nice silk chiffon with a few layers.

 

It's definitely easy to get screwed over when it comes to alterations, but also be cautious of just going to a regular seamstress. Make sure you go to someone who has at least worked on a lot of wedding dresses before because they have a lot more structure than regular dresses, and altering them requires a much more advanced skill-set. If you have a very simple dress then you definitely shouldn't pay much, but if you have some $5000 couture dress with tons of beading and fine details, it's going to be very hard to alter while maintaining the integrity and look of the dress, so expect to pay a lot!

I also purchased my dress from David's about a month ago. Went to my first fitting, and she'll have to take in a lot. I think I was in between sizes, and we just ended up ordering up. My alteration are $250 for the hem, bustle, and taking it in on the sides.
