My FI's mother passed away when he was 7. All of my grandparents have passed away and all he has is one grandmother who is still alive.
What I'm mainly concerned about is how to honor his mother without everyone breaking down and crying...at his sister's weddings we all cried. I want it to be a happy remembrance - and so does he.
I like the balloon idea...what do ya'll think?

Or you could read a rememberance poem (although I admit that may make people sad)
Another idea is to leave a seat empty and place flowers on that seat in honor of the person.

I put an empty chair and used a battery operated candle inside a votive holder to mark my dad's seat.
