yeah I'm kind of excited too. I googled my future name to see who else had it. There were a few. I'm just so excited to have a name people can pronounce that also doesn't rhyme with anything naughty.

I'm wondering if it's going to become confusing at work though. I wanted to leave my last name in parenthesis in my emails but I was told that would be weird. Like, Morgan (Currentname) Newname. Is that weird? I'll move in about 3 years & then I can drop that whole thing and start fresh with a new name. Just at Duke I feel like people know Morgan Currentname.

My alternative - maybe naming my first kid my maiden name, it would work for either a boy or girl...

:)

my friend wants to do this. I've never heard of it. She has a different name than her siblings & wants to keep the tradition.

I changed my social security card last week. It was very weird. I hate my old last name. Everyone pronounces my first name wrong already and so to finally get a last name that ppl can pronounce. HELL YEAH! I just hate writing it ...it has a k and I hate cursive k's. But I want my kids and I to have the same name too. So I just changed it.

its not hard to change.. my problem comes in as far as when i apply for residency.. between transcripts, papers, rotation recommendations, and just docs getting to know me as one name, i worry that if my application comes in under a difference last name, they wont recognize it.. i have to find out more about this before i make a decision

I was concerned this as well. I am in the middle of my program (doctorate or pharmacy) and was worried the complications/confusions that might arise if we got married the summer after graduation while I was in the process of taking my boards, applying for residencies or jobs, etc.

I know it sounds weird... but that ended up being a part of the reason we are getting married when we are (5 months before graduation). This way not only can I have my new name on all my professional stuff.... but since FI and I are graduating in the same class I will get to sit by him and walk across the stage near him at graduation. (cheesy I know...)

Plus although my current last name is unique most people say or pronounce it wrong... and I really don't have any other sentimental attachment to it.

I'm totally excited about changing my last name. I was always last in lists because my last name started with a Zr.. but my new last name is a Cr.. plus my married name will just roll off the tongue... not like my current last name which is just hard to pronounce anyways.

My soon to be sister-in-law didn't change her name. After she had kids and they started school, she found it hard since the kids names were different and everyone referred to her has Mrs. (kids name). Applications for various things were started with the wrong legal last name, etc.

If you aren't planning on kids then keeping your name doesn't present this problem. Keep a close eye on your credit report. My FI and I have been together almost 10 years and own various things jointly. When I purchased my car, we listed my name first and him as the co-owner. The bank we have the loan with never sends credit solitations to me, but always sends them to my FI with my last name. That name combo happens to be my brother's and therefore could potentially create problems (if my brother wanted to apply for credit).

I'm white (blonde) and my FI is Taiwanese. Originally I wasn't going to change my name. I thought in business it would create a difficult introduction, but now I'm getting used to the idea.

I am not planning to change my name, I am professionally established with my name and I've had it for 29 years and that's how everyone knows me and that's the way I'll keep it!

We do plan on having children and I get this question all the time...."but your kids will have a different last name then you won't that bother you?" And my answer to that is....half the kids have different last names from their children due to divorce and remarriage and if it doesn't bother me why should it bother anyone else. I have lots of clients who are professionals and they never changed their names and their children carry their father's last name.

I love my name and my family traditions and am proud of what my family represents and my family traditions and would never consider being something that I'm not! I'm marrying Tim not becoming his property. Our children will have his last name because they are part of him. We are partners in a marriage and that doesn't require me to change my name.

That's just how I feel everyone is entitled to their own opinions and reasons for changing or not changing.smile123.gif
