Reception party back home?

Funny how so many of us think alike. Maybe that's why we chose DWs in the first place. I plan on having a BBQ at a park sometime a month or two after we get back. The thought of having a formal AHR makes me feel sick the same way thoughts of a formal wedding does. I only have a good time when I'm relaxed so I only want to plan relaxing events.

I am having a second ceremony and reception when we return. My 6 year old son (from previous marriage) says that he will feel "forgotten" if he isn't included. So, we are slipping away to Jamaica. We'd already planned the DW when my son told us this and I didn't want to change it. We are keeping it really small, 50 people, and ONLY our close friends and family.

 

I had a huge wedding the first time, 300 guests+12 BM and Groomsmen=4 FG, 1 RB, 1BR, 1BB. Most of which were my parents' friends and I refuse to do that again. I was so unhappy!

We had a big backyard Fiesta for everyone who couldn't make it to Mexico (plus a few who could )

 

I don't even remember how many people we had, but it was a lot! Our backyard was packed!

 

I spent weeks cooking and freezing things like chalupas, empanadas, Mexican wedding cakes, "Mexican" meatballs, I had a taco stand, Mexican rice, all kinds of desserts (Pina Colada & Margarita cheesecakes mmm), lots of Tequila, lots of Corona, lots of Margaritas....there was soooo much food, and it was a looooot of work....but we had so much fun!! We had a pinata for the kids, my aunt's fiance borrowed a screen and projector from work and he played our wedding video right in the back yard for everyone to see....it started at 4pm and a lot of people didn't leave until 1 or 2am....soooo fun!!

That sounds so fun! If I do end up doing anything, I would love it to be something just like that.

I didn't want an AHR, but most of his huge family isn't able to come to Jamaica. So, we are having one. Months after the DW. Haven't started thinking about it at all yet!!!

This is right up our ally. Margarita cheesecakes sound awesome! Did you make them? If so...recipe please!!!!

We are def having one, I think about 2 weeks after we return from Jamaica. I wanted to have one introduction/celebration for the entire family. Most of my family isn't coming to Jamaica and almost none of my friends are (all have small children). I didn't want to be at a family or friend party and people keep saying, oh yeah, congrats, how's married life? I wanted to kind of get that bit out of the way all at once. Sounds weird, but it totally makes sense in my head!

 

We are probably having the party at my fiance's parents house in the backyard under tents with almost 300 people. Kind of a more formal type of bbq. I def do not want formal, but I want it to be a nice party.

We are still on the fence. We do not want to spend much money at all, but we can't do it in a backyard because it will be November when we get home. So, we don't know what to do. Renting a hall, any hall, will cost too much money. And, would it be cheesy if we made it potluck? Because paying for food would be so expensive. And then what do we do about drinks, we would have to provide somethings. See, too much money. We want to do it, but we don't want to spend the money.

I might have answered this before, but in case I didn't...

 

We are definitely having an AHR. We could only invite about 30 people to the wedding (immediate family and a few close friends each), so we have a lot more people we want to celebrate with and that want to celebrate with us.

 

We intended to do something casual but ended up picking a great venue (Green Pastures) in Austin that's not casual, so it'll be a little more like a traditional reception than we originally planned, but I think it'll still be a blast.
