Anyone getting legally hitched before Mexican wedding?

Recommended Posts

Hey girls, my FI and I were considering getting legally wed in the US before Mexico. Ive heard its a pain to ever get copies of your marriage cert and other reasons we are considering this.

I personally do not think it will take away from our wedding, as we'll treat the courthouse marriage as not the "real thing". Still,I am nervous AND I made the mistake of telling a couple people and they kept saying "dont do that - it will ruin it!" censored.gif

Ok, so plan is to not tell a soul and have everyone believe we are getting married at the ceremony they attend.

Anyone been there done that?

Thanks chicas!

yes, that is our plan as well. i have told a few friends and agree is a good idea. the only people coming to our states wedding is our parents, siblings, and grandparents. we are not planning on telling anyone else because we don't want them to say we will come to that wedding and not the one in mexico.

I did the same... We were married in the Courthouse here in NJ 2 weeks prior to us going to Mexico...I did not want to deal with all the paperwork down there and just had the legal part taken care of. Just the 2 of us and our parents were there... I did not want it to feel like we were getting married at all... and to be honest, it did not feel like we were married after that... the real thing was Mexico! Plus down in Mexico you are required to have a blood test down there. Up here we did not have to!

Hi Amy,

That too is our plan. We dont want to have to go thru the blood tests and all the fees associated with getting legally married in Mexico. I also wondered if it would take away from the wedding in mexico but Im okay with it now. I am going to totally down play the whole day and we will do it right before we leave to go to Mexico. I would rather save the $600+ US its going to cost us and put it towards my h,moon or something else.

We arent telling anyone other then our witnesses of course to avoid exactly what happened to you and to keep the parents happy. I think its easier this way and there will be no waiting for a marriage cert. We will always make the date we got married in Mexico our anniversary not the date we got married in Canada.

Plus by doing a symbolic wedding instead of a legal one, we can get an english ceremony and not a spanish one with a translator. THat was my other big beef with a legal wedding. I want to hear ceremony first hand, not from an interpreter.

Hope that helps....

My friend Lauren got married in Mexico last March and it took 5 months for her to get her marriage certificate! The costs too - it does make sense.

Thanks Erica for the feedback from someone who did it! No one will know during the ceremony and no thumb prints in the middle of it I guess!

We got married 09/09/09 by court..but we dont consider that we are married. My FI didnt want to do the blood test at the resort, I needed health insurance, and he could claim me on his taxes...lol

Plus we are doing a catholic cerm. and that would have meant having the priest and the other guy...no thank you!

I'm getting married Jan 8 at the Barcelo and it took very little to convince us that making it legal here was the way to go! it will be so much less of a hassle once we get there, and same with us- the day we make it legal we're not going to make it anything special - the REAL wedding is mexico!! also, both me and the FI are in the military as well so this will be soooo much more relaxing to have allll the paperwork done before we go to Mexico so when we get home- we can just relax!

A friend of a friend got legally married in Mexico. Same thing that all the other girls already said - so expensive to get the papers transferred. But unfortunately they ended up divorcing. This was SOOO expensive for them. They had to go back to Mexico to do this and pay a ton of money. But then again, I don't thinkk any of us are thinking of divorce - in fact getting legally married in Mex may be more motivation never to divorce :P.

For me, we decided to do the legal part here. The cost of the blood tests we would have to get in mexico is how much the process is going to cost. Also, the wedding package is about $800 less for the symbolic ceremony (and thats the difference between the smaller "real" wedding package and the bigger symbolic package) so huge diff.

The problem lies in that we sorta told almost everyone who are going to Mexico that it won't be the real deal when we are there. Surprisingly, no one seemed to care.

Oh and another thing, since we are getting legally married within a week of leaving for mexico we get to reap the benefits of being honeymooners at the resort - meaning room upgrades and some other perks!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
