Trying on wedding dresses - help!!!

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'm kind of freaking out... I'm planning to go dress shopping this weekend with my MOH. I'm a size 12 ("street size"). I'm starting to hear (and read) about how I'm therefore actually a plus size bride, and that I will have a hard time trying on dresses because things wont be carried in my size??!! I know I'm not small, but I'm hardly big enough that I shouldn't be able to try on wedding dresses!!?? I can't believe that would be true - can anyone offer any insight?

If it is of any relevance, I have my heart set on a Maggie Sottero (well, several.. lol)

Hi - I dont think you should have any issues! Most of the Maggie sample dresses I tried on I think were an 8 or a 10 but they are stretched out so they are bigger. I also found Maggie dress sizes to be pretty much inline with "street" sizes. Also even if some of the dresses may not zip or tie up all the way you should be able to get an idea of how it looks. Finally there is always david's bridal which carries bigger sizes but not Maggies

You need to look for dresses that you like. IGNORE THE SIZES!

You might want to wear some Spanx and leave your inhibitions at home. even though a dress my not zip, you can still get an idea of how it will look. (you will have a little skin showing.

Corset back dresses are a good option as they are a little more adjustable.

Be sure to take your mom and a friend who can help you out. Someone might need to stand behind you and hold a part of the dress so you can see what it will really look like.

I am also a 12 street size. I had a horrible time dress shopping! I am really busty and almost no dresses would zip over the girl! Also, the designers all run differently. In one company I wore a 12 and in another I was a 20! I probably wouldn't try on anything smaller than an 8 or 10, ONLY because it will be harder to envision.

I took pictures of every dress I tried on and in most of them I have my arms squished down to hold up a dress! LOL

It can be a frustration process, but you will find the perfect dress, I promise!

I think you will be fine...I remember the first time I went dress shopping it seemed like every single dress I tried on was a 12 or 14. I assumed that was what most "sample sizes" were so they would fit a variety of people (with clamps if needed). I think 12 is pretty average!

I have no advice for you as I have not yet been dress shopping but you have expressed my biggest fear! Since I have the time I am trying to get in shape and shed some sizes and start dress shopping this fall. But if I can't pull it off I just know I'll be in tears on what should be a really exciting day! They charge extra for bigger sizes too. And I really don't want to have to tell the photographer to make sure I don't look fat in all the pictures!

I do think that you have nothing to worry about from what I have heard. Good Luck and have fun! Let us know how it goes!

You're fine... My sister was your size and when I went with her to try on dresses, she didn't have a problem at all. Most of the sample sizes are 8 or 10, but that doesn't even matter. When you find one you love, just order it in your size. No biggie... everyone goes through this. Can't wait to see what you find!!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
