Amanda - I did it explicity for the reason you suggested - I was told no, then yes, then it depends on who you get - it was annoying - I waited in line... you know what I mean.. so I just paid and got it done.

I have sent an inquiry to the local muliticultural center for translating information. I do not need a seal, correct?? Is an affadavit sufficient? This is all more confusing than getting the actual marriage documents done!! lol

Amanda, I really think you should try to change your name without getting it translated. I did and so did 3 of my friends and we had NO problem at all, we just brought the original. I think its worth it for the money alone to just try it. If they need a translation then get it done. If you can get one document done, then you have something with your new name and will have no problem with the other, maybe try your health card first and see what happens. Just a thought.

Okay another question:

 

What if you just want to tack on your husband's name to your name, but without a hyphen? I am a licensed professional and so I want to continue to use my maiden name in my professional life. Outside of that, I want to be called by my husbands name. So basically, I want to be Mrs. "FH" but Dr. "maiden name." Does it basically work the same way or are there special considerations to be taken? I am in Ontario.

Hmmm, I think if you are assuming your husband's last name anywhere it has to be everywhere as well. For example, your paycheques would need to match your bank account information, as well as your SIN card and taxes... It might be useful to give a call to the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) to see what they say about that.

 

Of course, you could always just keep your maiden name throughout but have everyone call you by your husband's name socially.

Hmm, yea I guess that would be the case.

I think then what I will do is just tack his name on at the end of mine without a hyphen and then that should be the least disruptive. So I will be legally Dr. "maiden name FH". Most people would call me Dr. "maiden name" in my professional life and then I can be Mrs. "FH" socially.

ok ladies, i am so confused. We legally got married here in canada (ontario) do I have to apply to the registrar to get my marriage license or will i get a copy of it. The justice of the peace said it takes approx 10 weeks to process but she didn't say whether i had to apply or not. I really don't want to change my name on my birth certificate, but i was not born it ontario which i thought made a difference. Can any one clue me in, I really would like to get this name change done, if i only could figure out where to start!!

Ladies, have a lookie at my post here & here with regards to name changing/translation. The BC Vital Statistics Agency said they needed a notarized translated MC but the insurance corporation only needs the MC translated by a "registered" translator?!?! WTF?? Not sure about what Service Canada requires yet. At least the certified translation will only be $50 and not another $100!!

You may want to check out Online Services for Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates at the Service Ontario website. I'm not changing my BC because I was born with that family name.

Agreed - I don't really think anyone should change their BC. That's what they were born as, so that who you are. In changing your BC you are legally changing your name, but with changing everything else you are assuming the name. You will always be Jane (maiden name)...but you will be Jane (married name) too - if that makes any sense!

Did my DL, SIN card, both banks & car insurance today!! I have to fill out a whole passport application again and GO to the office!! I'm SOOOOO tired of long & slow lineups!!

 

Oh ya, here's a tip... Before you go to change your ID etc., make sure you practice your new signature!! Practice, practice, practice!!
