Honestly even though guys can be opinionated at random times about the weirdest things, I really don't think anyone's FI is going to burst out with "I can't believe you got a cowneck, don't you know those are so over? I mean that was so Reem Acra circa 95". Seriously, unless your FI is a designer himself he probably has no clue about silhoutte styles and will think you are the prettiest thing in the world on that day no matter what you wear. With the exception of some, most guys are pretty easy to please. And if he knows you love the dress, then he will love it too. So I say pick it out w/o him and give him a nice surprise. And remember it's not the whole hair done and makeup that gives it the wow factor it's the excitement of it actually being the day you get married.

I have to say I sort of disagree with most of people here.  My fiancee Craig is my best friend in the world.  This is what I did.  I went online to the David's bridal website and picked out 8 gowns that I liked.  Then me and my fiancee went to the appointment together.  He saw all the gowns I was thinking about including the one that was the "ONE".  I didn't buy it that day or give any indication to him of which one I actually bought.  A week later I brought my mom back and she agreed with me that's when I bought the dress.  I have to say though I wouldn't have been so convinced that I loved my dress if Craig had not seen me in it.  I feel that him going with me really helped because I don't want him to hate the dress and this way I know that he doesn't hate it.

I think more and more brides are doing this.  It still allows their fiance to be apart of the dress picking without knowing which one was picked.  I can't even get my fiance to go shopping for stuff for himself, let alone come dress shopping with me!

I really like this idea. FI has always said that he wants to come shopping, and I have been trying to put the brakes on this idea. He actually is quite opinionated, especially about women's clothing. And, while he might not know every term, he has a pretty good handle on things. Example: when I was a bm, he was at my fitting, and no one could believe some of the stuff he said... something like: "I really like how it tapers at your waist. It accentuates you there. And the colour is great. A v-neck is a good option for you, or maybe a sweetheart? Anyway, I like the shape of it. A-line I think? Maybe you should bring it up an inch or so at the bottom. That length is actually making you look slightly shorter. Yes, that's better."

I have to make a trip out of dress shopping, since I do not live near stores. And, since he is so opinionated, I worry about falling in love with a dress, and him being "it's okay", since I won't be all done up. My solution is to show him LOTS of online pictures, and only print off the ones we both like to take with me. Also, I am pretty sure that his mom (who I want to come) and my sister (who is my moh) will be his voice there. Which will be interesting.... my other bm (who also wants to come) does not really like his style... (He is really, really voting short dress, and almost has me totally convinced.)

So, in short, I am trying to involve him and still have that moment walking down the aisle.

I am anti-FH-dress shopping. It was such a special thing for my bridesmaids, mom, FMIL, and me.....it just wouldn't have been the same if a man was with. We did talk about the types of dresses he thought I would look good  in, but ultimately he left it all up to me. The way I like it.

I definitely will not let my hubby to be see my gown before I walk the aisle.  Just my own opinion though.

My FI doesn't want to go dress shopping and I'm not so sure I would want him to go.  In my case, my mom and friends are all available to go with me, so I wouldn't have to worry about it.  I do like the idea of having the dress be a surprise.

My FI didn't come with me but I took pictures and showed him afterwards so I had an idea of what he liked. I didn't tell him which one I chose, but out of the 13 dresses he looked at he picked my dress out as his favourite. I'm pretty sure by now he has completely forgotten what any of them looked like, plus I'm having mine changed in a few places so I'm not worried about giving the suprise away.

My fiance and I just moved to a new city and no other friends or family were nearby or available. I had browsed with my mom previously and got a good idea of what looked good but didn't find anything at that time.

On a whim I went to a local bridal consignment shop I heard about. I took a new close friend from work, my phone to call mom and take lots of pictures and my fiance. I didn't expect to find anything, just looking in case but I ended up finding my dress with him there. I don't think it will spoil a thing. Like other brides said, he is my best friend- I expect that I could have worn a paper bag and he would have liked it.

I suppose I should add that our wedding will be super casual and only parents, siblings and close friends if they can make it. Where other brides may have family traditions of shopping with generations of women and having umpteen bridal showers and events, our wedding plans thus far have been centered around us as a couple. I suppose I would describe it as eloping-plus. :) So for him to be a part of the process was an event- a memory of this time for us.
