Veryvalero's Wedding Planning Thread - Grand Sunset Princess

Updates!

I'm trying not to freak out but it's crazy how time flies.  It feels like just yesterday that I had like 3 months to go til the wedding day and now it's like right around the corner.  We depart June 14th so it's basically 1 month and a few weeks.  ahhh.

Marriage License

We have applied for our marriage license!  So excited.  The FI got really emotional about it but I tried to keep my cool.  Someone else on the forum gave me great advice to just see it as the paper to make the process in Mexico legal, and that's that.  We are looking into officiants and hoping to get the 'paper work' done June 12th.

Groomzillo

The groomie ordered his suit over the weekend.  I have no idea what it looks like.  I trust he chose something awesome and I'm really happy I don't know what it looks like so that I can be surprised too!

Papel Picado

We have ordered 10 strands of this pretty papel picado for the décor at the Chill Out Private reception.  For anyone that hasn't been to the Grand Sunset Princess, it's a hidden gem.  Amazing prices, lots of space and the staff is amazing!

This is the look we are going for!

Wedding Dress alterations

My appointment is next Monday!  Very excited.  I've continued to make progress with my weight loss.  I have lost 6 inches off my waist since I started my weight loss progress in March.

I've lost inches off my legs and arms too which I'm so happy.  I've been weight lifting to tone my arms.  My arms are the worst and it's a sweetheart dress so i need them to cooperate :)

Can't wait for the fitting next week! :)

omg!! I love that venue!! It's truly beautiful and I think it will look great with everything you have planned.

I can't wait to hear back about how your fitting went! I'm sure the dress will fit really nicely, especially with all those inches lost! 6in is a lot!! congrats on the hard work ;)

You guys are leaving on my brother's birthday! The day my life changed forever hahah :P. How soon can you apply for the marriage license? I was just thinking about this the other day.

Funny story about licenses. One of my mom's friends, she's like my aunt, got married about 15 years ago and they were having just the legal ceremony. When they asked friends everyone had been married in a church, so everyone told them that the officiant takes care of the license. Well when the wedding day came, the officiant asked for the license and they didn't have it!! They had to convince the officiant to do like a symbolic ceremony until they got their actual licence and could be legally married since all their guests were already waiting, she almost didn't do it. Luckily no one found out about this mishap, they went through all the motions of a real legal wedding and everyone thought they were legally married right then and there haha. Moral of the story, get your license girls!

The gold glitter numbers is what i also am using!! I love it! I also didnt  want to just do a frame with a number in it. I wanted to make it stand out. Plus a little pop of gold here and there will look so pretty! Your wedding is coming together so beautifully!! So excited for you!

@TinkerSofi

Ahhh, I was writing a response and totally lost it.

So things that I learned in this process is that in Ontario, a marriage license is valid up to 3 months.  So you must get married within 3 months of obtaining the license.  You must obtain a license regardless of whether you are getting legally married here or abroad.  Once you get married by your Officiant here, you then have to mail out the paper work to the Province and it takes about 10 weeks to your marriage certificate records.

Another thing I learned is that you cannot get married legally if you performed a symbolic ceremony before the legal wedding.  It is considered to proceed with the process in bad faith.  So they were very clear to explain that.  I've heard some people do that on this forum but we didn't want to take a chance so we are definitely doing it beforehand.  Again, these are Ontario rules.

The marriage license in Oakville cost us $145; if we were to go with the in-house officiant it would cost $329 + $229 to rent the room at city hall.  They gave us a list of independent officiants so we are going to compare prices because the $329+ $229 are costs that can be avoided.

That's crazy about your family friend @TinkerSofi  Wow.  they are lucky the officiant went along with it.

@@snswedding2016 & @racht33  We are so excited!  We love the venue too.  We've been to the Grand Sunset Princess twice now, and the Chill Out bar is a beautiful beach club during the day.  Much more private.  It's extra to go in there but the service and privacy is amazing.  We can't wait!!!!!!!

@@veryvalentine I didn't know the rule about not having the symbolic ceremony before the legal. Luckily we were always planning to do the legal first but didn't know there was a rule about it. Thanks for posting that!

Just to compare prices, the officiant we're most likely using costs $275 (weekday) and $300 (weekend) for a simple wedding (couple & witnesses), a small wedding (up to 50 people) is $350.

Yeah I didn't know about the whole legal before symbolic ceremony thing. Good thing ours is booked for before! Although how would they know if you had a symbolic ceremony first

That's around what we are paying $260. We're in Calgary but still. We're getting married on a Friday but at noon :)

Exactly.  How would they know...but I wouldn't take a risk.  They were sure to outline the rules.  She said if they knew that vows were exchanged beforehand than they wouldn't marry as it is seen as 'bad faith'  and it would have to be dealt with in court.  etc etc.

It just sounds more expensive at that point.  Also, knowing my luck....so I know the rules and I'm following them.  lol

Hey!  In AB it's the same 90 days!    I paid about $90 at the registry in Beddington but they are all different - I called a place down Centre Street and they quoted me $75 so I was a bit annoyed that Beddington was more.   Our officiant actually mailed out the paperwork for us, so we didn't have to do that.  We also didn't have to wait 10 weeks, right after Mexico (so maybe 2-3 weeks total) I went back to Beddington for our marriage certificate. It came in the mail the same week. That was around $45 I believe.  I paid $100 for my officiant.

I didn't know you couldn't do the symbolic first, wow!! I wonder if it depends on province and country, because I know Marina got married after Mexico.  Interesting. I am sure you could find that on the AB Works website if you planned to get married after.

@@TinkerSofi

Oh! that really does suck about your friend's aunt! funny now I am sure. That happened to our friend on here (MrsKtobe)  She went for her legal ceremony just before they left for Mexico in November and the officiant never told her to get a marriage license so they couldn't be married.  She had no idea to get one.  I think in the end they ended up making the one in Mexico legal.

@@veryvalentine that space is so beautiful! you could get away with no decorations at all there - but why would we do that to ourselves? it's like we love the added stress and work :) those papel picados are the best. might be stealing that idea.

congrats on the 6 inches - that's no easy task. take a moment and celebrate!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
