Post Ceremony Champagne Toast?

I just don't understand this "post ceremony champagne toast" thing. My WC tells me they supply flutes and champagne at the ceremony location (beach, not the same as the cocktail hour or reception) for a toast, immediately following the ceremony. I've never been to a destination wedding and I've certainly never seen this done at a traditional wedding. Speeches and toasting is typically done during the reception... why are we having a toast immediately after the ceremony, awkwardly all standing on the beach? Is this common practice?

please enlighten me, i just don't get it =)

I'm not sure but if you find it awkward opt out. Have the champagne flutes at the place seatings instead!

Hi @@LauraM they had post ceremony champagne toasts at my friend's destination wedding and we intend to do the same. It didn't feel awkward at all and no speeches were done. It was more of a happy toast to the newlyweds and made for a great photo op. It was nice since it was hot on the beach and cold champagne was a nice thing to have.

 

If it feels awkward I'm sure they don't have to do it. As @@LisaAnthonyPoppy said, maybe you can save it for your reception

@@LauraM So I thought it seemed awkward too so I'm just opting to save that champagne for my bridal party while we are taking pictures while the guests are at the cocktail hour before the reception.

Maybe awkward wasn't the correct term... I just can't envision it since all the ceremonies I've been to end with the bride and groom walking down the isle, then a congratulatory reception line, and then the bride and groom leave for pictures. I just can't imagine walking down the isle and then waiting for my guests to all join me for a group drink. I don't know... i guess I just don't understand since I've never experienced it. The resort also provides champagne for our ceremony. It seems a little redundant... I was just checking to see if this was common, or a different tradition done at my resort.

@@LauraM haha I know what you mean. It's a good thing I've been to one so I kind of have a sense of it.

 

Based on my 1 experience, my friends got married on the beach. They walked down the aisle then basically looped back to greet all the guests. So we were all still at the beach and then servers came with champagne. So as the bride and groom get greeted with congratulations by everyone they all get served champagne. Then we all raised a toast to the newlyweds. Group pics followed then cocktail hour. This was when the bride and groom left to take pics.

 

This was at the Riu palace in Cabo. So I guess it's a common thing

We had one. We walked up the isle and our WC had our champagne ready, then everyone got their glass. As it was being served everyone hugged us and said congrats. Once we all had one everyone raised their hand and the MC said a very quick toast - like 5 words. Then he immediately told people to be ready for pics and how he was going to arrange people. Once those pics were done the mariachi came and it was cocktail hour while we had our own pics done. Worked awesome and wouldn't have it any other way!

I thought it was weird before too but it was actually really nice. We walked to the end of the aisle and there was a little area set up w a table of champagne. We did a toast and then did group pics. We got some nice pics of the toast too - I'll post some later when I get home
