This was my exact logic, and for months I didn't think it would be a concern until it seemed to be the only complaint from 4 recent brides at my resort which of course made me nervous.  But our ceremony is the most important part. If we were getting married in the states, my brother would have officiated. We thought it would have been more special and personal to have him marry us than a stranger. And a part of me still believes this should also apply for the destination wedding.  My Fi is actually more adamant about our guests not knowing, especially his parents.

I honestly think most people are excited that we're forcing them to take a vacation and our marriage is secondary with exception to our parents and best man and woman. And I think the only ones people who will question our choice to have a symbolic ceremony are my Fi's parents. His mom will feel emotionally slighted and his dad is just cheap and wouldn't understand why we're doing it. But I don't believe that anyone's decision to come would change based on whether or not our ceremony is legal. Most of our friends and family are pragmatic enough to understand if they were to find out or inquire (at lease the guests that weâ€re inviting).

When itâ€s all said and done, this will be the day when my Fi and I publically profess our love and commitment. And if people think any less of it because itâ€s not legal, than maybe they shouldnâ€t come. I might have to talk with the Fi again. I think I just convinced myself that I want my brother to marry us.

Your brother should definitely do it!!!  That would be so sweet and meaningful.  You go girl, fight the power!!!

Honestly, it is too much of a worry to do the legal bits in Mexico.  I've heard there is a lot more involved.  You are doing the "stress free" option, which is how weddings should be :)

So what are you ladies doing exactly? Are you doing a symbolic wedding and getting married in the states right before? We are still undecided on what to do as well.. My thoughts exactly on the symbolic ceremony is that it would be cheapened, and I dont want anyone to know its really not real.

We also tossed the idea around of doing a church ceremony the weekend before we go to Mexico for those that can't make it, but I'm not so sure how I feel about that either...

Thanks, that was just the vote of confidence I needed! I totally would have inserted smiley faces high-5ing, but oddly enough they don't have one.

We're definitely doing a symbolic ceremony. We never wanted to deal with the hassle of all the formalities and extra expense of getting married legally in Mexico. And as long as I can convince my Fi that we donâ€t need to put up a front for his parents, than my brother will officiate our ceremony. This shouldnâ€t require much convincing, but it still needs to be discussed.  And as of right now, weâ€re leaning towards getting legally married a day or two after we return from our the destination wedding. We want the entire process to be a fresh and first time experinece so weâ€re reluctant to legally marry before.

Make sure you check with your resort on this.  In Punta Cana I have to show them our marriage certificate when we arrive.  We have to be married before we go down.

We're good to go, but thanks for checking. My resort and Mexico for that matter, doesn't have this requirment. Strange that PuntaCana does.

That's amazing congratulations!!! You will love Kleinfeld's [if you're shooting at NYC location] it's beautiful!! Just don't let them pressure you off camera to buy anything! They tend to be very pushy and be sure to speak up if you're not happy with what they're pulling for you =)

I would love to see your shells when you get them.  Did you decide who is going to carry them?

I FINALLY finished my STD'S!!!!  People are loving the boarding pass.  Now, whats the next step?  Dress shopping?  When are you ladies sending out formal invites?

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
