Anyone getting married first and not telling guests?

Recommended Posts

For all you Canadian girls, esp. Ontarians, we got married the day before we left with my parents as our witnesses. We didn't tell anyone else though people did ask.. I tried to avoid answering rather than lying. I also went online to apply for the marriage certificate ($15) and within a week, got it back! Pretty quick I think.

We are celebrating our symbolic day as our anniversary, not the legal day...

I am lucky in that we have a good friend who is an ordained minister...we are going to apply for the marriage license a month before the wedding, as is good for 30 days in my state. Then, he will marry us in our living room either just before we leave or as soon as we get back. We will put the same date on the marriage license as the date we are married at DRC cheesy.gif We are not telling our family, I have only told my close friends that we are going to do the legal stuff in the states. I don't think our family would be upset at all, but I don't want to 'spoil' it for them, or for us, unnecessarily. I think our plan is brilliant cheesy.gif For those who don't have a close friend who is an ordained minister, you may want to look into having someone close to you get their 'license' or whatever it is called to perform marriage ceremonies...I have heard you can do this online, and it is certainly an option we would look into if we didn't already have our friend cheesy.gif

Great idea about changing the date. My FI mother is a notary so we were going to have her perform the services, but now that I think about it she may be an ordained minister. If not, I will have her become one. Otherwise we were just going to go get married before hand. Now, I am going Mindy's route...Genius!!!

We're getting married at the courthouse sometime in April because my brother is leaving to basic training in May and will miss the wedding in Mexico (which is symbolic anyway).

We're going to celebrate the Mexico date as our anniversary b/c that's when we're married "under God" :)

We are TOTALLY doing that! We plan to go get married at the local courthouse the week before and just fly on down and do the ceremony. We plan to say the "traditional" vows in the states and we are writing our own for the DR ceremony. We also will not exchange rings until the DR ceremony.

Honestly, if you think back to weddings you have been to, you never see the bride and groom actually sign the documents with the officiant, that is usually done while the guests are headed to the reception. Nobody will know, or even care enough to ask!

It is pretty easy if you think about it, plus everyone will be so caught up in the beauty and excitement of it all anyway wink.gif

i'm definitely not going to do a legal ceremony in mexico. too much hassle and i'd like to save myself the mula! i was actually thinking of getting legally married in the states AFTER our destination wedding. that way it feels more genuine to both of us when we exchange vows for the first time in mexico. anyone else doing this??

We thought about that too shae, BUT then you don't get the true honeymoon experience!!! ok ok minds out of the gutter girls, I meant that it will not really be a honeymoon because you are not married yet, as opposed to marrying FIRST and then celebrating and having a week long after party of sorts. Make sense?
