Oh lawd, I can see having a problem like yours during my wedding, mostly from my mom!! She would ask for a diamond necklace or something totally expensive also, regardless of us being on a budget!!

That was a pretty selfish move she made by asking for that!!

Well my DH and I paid for our wedding ourselves so God bless those girls that have the luxury of parents to pay or help. If your parents can help out great, if not, they can't. A gift to your parents is probably not required, but up to you and your budget. As for the MIL from hell, you guys are paying for her trip already. If she wants a diamond necklace as well, select a Cubic Zirconia from Claire's and wrap it up in a nice box and present it to her. I swear people with the entitlement issues really need to get a grip..

I am not sure where the tradition of giving gifts to the parents comes from, but I always assumed it was a personal choice and had nothing to do with whether they were paying or not. I would think that paying for your in-laws trips are enough if you are on a budget. As for your own parents, you can get them whatever your budget allows.

For mine and Fi's parents, we will probably get them a gift of some sorts -- not because they are paying, because they are not -- but because they have been awesome parents. If we can pay for their trips, then we will and that will most likely be our gift to them. We will probably get nice cards for them with some pictures in addition to and despite of getting a gift.
