H1N1 Vaccine??

Recommended Posts

Such a hard decision. These shots are coming in November and I have a 3 year old & 20 month old. I also run a daycare, so i feel like I should get my kids & myself vaccinated. I think i'll take a trip to the Doctors and get his professional opinion :)

I have an appt with my son's pediatrician in 10 days upon completion of his antibiotics & I now plan to discuss the H1N1 vax with her. I would love to hear what your pediatrician says & compare it to what ours has to say, so if you would be willing to share, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm driving myself up a wall with this decision; I'm back & forth. Hopefully the doc can help make this difficult decision. THANKS!!

This is a link from the FDA of the pamplet insert of H1N1 vax (novartis) : http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Biologi.../UCM182242.pdf
It states the above.

Also i would recommend if you are able to, do ask for a single dose vial rather than a multidose. The multi dose use mercury to stabilize the vaccine tmake it last longer. Mercury is damaging to the nervous system, especially those in young children. I believe these are offered to pregnant women and children anyway but I would still ask for one for me too ( if i was getting it).

I respect all opinions and think it is a very difficult decision to make. I think that all sides should be taken into consideration before making any decisions on such a new vaccine. There are obvious known risks of the flu and h1n1, but there are unknown risks to the vaccine. I would rather treat the illness than create a new one. I suppose i'm lucky to live in Canada where health care is covered.
I guess i'm a skeptic and feel that because the government, who receives money from pharma companies tells me everything is OK, I'm not quick to believe everything they tell me to do. Sick days at work equals employees not working and therefore a faltering economy = unhappy government. I'm not a conspiracy theorist or anything crazy, I've just always questioned where information is coming from and who is supporting it (on both ends).
Anyway, hope this doesnt come across bitchy. I guess I just feel that people get so much information fed by the government and pharma companies, and not enough from the other side, where opinions can be shunned and silenced by the larger, louder other side. It's good to look hard for both sides that's all. Anyway, not trying to start a fight, just encourage everyone to make decisions base on both sides, and to research before you put something foreign and potentially damaging into your body or those you love.
YES!

I am a nurse and have never had the flu shot due to the fact that I am allergic to chicken eggs (it is cultured in eggs). However, I use all other precautions like hand washing, masking when around patients with flu like symptoms, coughing into my arm instead of my hand and staying home if I don't feel well. Each year people die from the flu, regardless if it's the 2009 H1N1 (or, as I have been calling it..."R2D2" :P). I am not saying that you shouldn't protect yourself or your children, I am just saying that I feel the media has completely blown this out of proportion with the 2009 H1N1. Here, in Canada, it won't be available to health care workers until December and there are already cases of flu like symptoms being reported in and around the hospital I work at. Needless to say, it may be too late for the vaccine this year. I lived through the SARS epidemic and THAT was way worse than the H1N1 has proved to be. Use your judgement and discretion before you decide. I think that you are making a good informed decision on the health of you and your family and that is the best way to be!
And yes!

I am very anti-vaccine period but this thing I would not touch! I know my thoughts are probably not shared by anyone on this board as I have learned from the past. But I do believe this has been blown out of proportion. I already had the swine flu and my nephew and niece did too. I didn't die and they didn't either. It was pretty much like the regular flu. I do believe the media is blowing it up. And yes I agree big ol' pharma is getting alot of money from this. And personally I don't trust someone whose main goal is profit. I wouldn't vaccinate me or my child with any vaccine much less this one. And hearing Dr's and the makers of the previous vaccine who said they would not give it to their children or themselves. Uh hello!? If they aren't why would I?

Now thinking over it I probably wouldnt do the H1N1 however my daughter did get her regular flu shot today. A is a paramedic so he comes in contact with all sorts of stuff you never know what he may have clinging to him. He is very good about washing and things but again Id rather be proactive!

Personally i don't think there is a problem with the regular vaccines that children get if it saves someone the heartache of a child with menengitis or some other disease. I would never willingly put something harmful in my childs body...however that being said, I don't like the idea of giving my children something so new and unknown. I know the things i've heard about the reg vaccines risks(autism, etc...)and still continue to vaccinate my kids, but when there are unknown risks, thats when i think it becomes scary and will talk to my family doctor, whom i trust and have had for years, to see what his opinion will be. I know he isn't in it just for monetary reasons and will give me the best advice.

That being said Married In Maui---I will def let you know what the doc says :)

Thank you all for keeping this discussion respectable! All of your opinions are welcomed and valued wink.gif

Neither my husband or I are getting this vaccine or the standard flu vaccine. I think that there is a lot to be said about taking care of yourself and boosting your immune system naturally. Anytime I get a flu of any kind I can honestly say it is due to me not taking the best care of myself. When I've contracted something going around the office it's when I haven't been getting enough rest or eating properly. When I am on the ball illness comes and goes around the office but I don't get it.

There are people with weakened immune systems or who are just alarmed because this is so hyped up so I get the desire to take the vaccine and that is fine for someone else to decide, I would just rather take my natural chances and not subject myself to this vaccine.

May we all be healthy this cold and flu season :)

I hope you find an answer you are more comfortable with. My daughter had surgery at 5 months and had to go on antibiotics. My naturopath and I were discussing possible vaccinations for her (standard ones) and she said to wait 30 days after surgery if possible to ensure that she is fully healthy again. Antibiotics kill all good and bad bacteria. Good bacteria is essential for a strong immune system and general health. It is standard not to vaccinate when your child is sick, but i would recommend that you fully strengthen his immune system before vaccinating if that is what you choose.
Upon her recommendation we gave her probiotics daily, and vitamin c in powder form in her bottle/cereal. This will naturally boost his immune system. If you know a naturopath or have the ability to purchase these products i highly recommend it, and to give at least 14 days minimum of loading before vaccinating. It will lessen any side effects that the vaccine may have. Get them specific for children and follow dosage on the bottle. We did not end up vaccinating but her recovery was swift. Just some recommendations to look into. I'm not a dr., but follow natural therapies and there is something to be said for boosting your natural immunity, as other members have said.

Ok, I have finally come to a decision in regards to vax our 6 yr old son. I will be taking our son today to the clinic to get his H1N1 vax. I spoke with the DR & while she does not necessarily recommend it for adults, she is recommeding it for children. She says this strain of the flu seems to be targeting children which is reason enough to vax your children. I have gone round & round with this & I hope I have made the right decision; I'm praying that I have made the right choice. Good luck to all of you that are trying to make this same, very difficult decision!!

**Thanks for all your input**

I have never had even a regular flu shot and I did get the flu once in the last 20 years. It was really bad though so I understand why if it can be prevented, you may as well. But for me, I figure once in 20 years isn't too bad. I figure if I have managed to avoid the regular flu I should be able to avoid SF. I don't know maybe it's stupid but it's worked out for me so far.

FI gets a flu shot every year but he hasn't said anything about the SF shot so not sure what he plans to do. I think you should do whatever makes you most comfortable. I personally have always thought if your body can fight infections and sickness on its own then it makes your immune system stronger but that is based on nothing, just what I tell myself!

My son and I are both going for the regular Flu vaccine today as I have asthma and I want to avoid any further breathing problems related the flu if at all possible. Still not sure about the H1N1 vaccine...but Im guessing in the end I will end up getting it. The media has completely blown this out of the water and of course is placing scare tactics everywhere. People die from the flu every year and it is never on the news. This H1N1 flu is no different, its just going to be more wide spread. The media needs to back off and chill a bit. Let people decide what they want to do and not what they get scared into.

    • Hi Everyone, So, I was cleaning out my closet and realized that I never sold off my extra wedding OOT bag stuff from our wonderful DW.   46 Daily Spanish for Dummies 30 Pool colored OOT fabric bags - approximately 13in x 13in. They lay flat.  I used them for our wedding and they were perfect for everything we needed to fit in each bag. There’s a slight shade variation in the group; I’m guessing some were cut from a different bolt of fabric.  They are also a little wrinkled from storage and will probably be wrinkled from shipping. I have three additional ones, but they somehow got something on them (likely toddler related). If needed, I can try to wash it out and send those as well.
    • I’m getting married in six months to my foreign girlfriend. I was advised by a friend that one of the things I need to do before saying I do is to get a prenuptial agreement. Basically it’s supposed to protect my assets and properties in case my relationship with my future wife goes down the drain. I don’t know though if this is an acceptable practice when marrying Kiev ladies. I don’t want to do it if it would be insulting on her end. I need advice on this. Please help me.
    • So we are currently looking for an all inclusive resort for the wedding. We have 60 guests and found all the Dreams resorts as options and all of them gave us a quote and discounted price since it’s off season etc. Resorts in Punta Canta gave us a reasonable price, Dominicus gave us a really good deal then La Romana Resort and Spa gave us their regular price and so hard to negotiate. Will someone tell us how special is this resort that they won’t give us a good discount when all my guests are staying in their resort for 5-8 days. We are bringing $$$ in their resort and not give us a discount?  What is so special with this resort?  Can somebody recommend a beautiful resort?
