We booked ours about 6 months out. Our TA told us a typical price from our city, and what a good price is during a "normal" year. Then we started tracking the dates we wanted on Yapta.com to watch and when it dropped we bought it. The info was good from her so we knew a good price when we saw it.

We had our wedding in Sept and we booked our flight exactly 330 days before our departure date which was the earliest we could book it. We ended up getting an awesome deal for a multi-country itinerary. We never found fares that low ever again. We saved about $900 per person by booking as soon as we could.

Southwest is your best bet if you can wait. Most Airline come out with fares about 11 or so months ahead of time. Southwest does not. If you were able to book that cheap before I would wait and for Southwest to come out with their Rate and as soon as they do I would book with whoever has the best rate. This way you know you didn't jump the gun and you were able to see Southwest Rate. I was able to book my airfare 7 months out and we book our resort a year out.

I should add that yapta is awesome, but doesn't track Southwest so you would have to check that separately.

But I would check and make sure Southwest is even an option for you, since they don't fly everywhere, and they aren't always the cheapest. (we found cheaper flights home to TX for the holidays this year on another airline, even though SW is usually the cheapest)

We only had one airline option for the day we were leaving for our wedding - only one flew from our city to PV midweek. We wouldn't have changed our days because of it, but it does change the "competitive" pricing because there aren't any! By tracking the prices, though, we still got our tickets for under $280 total (per person) which is a great price from PHX to PVR, normally it's around $350.

Also, other guests booked their days before looking at flight options and realized it was going to take them 20 hours to get there! If they had known they would have booked an extra day to make up for it. So I do recommend checking out the flight situations for the days you are considering (and having your guests do the same) so there aren't any of those kind of surprises!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
