Customs in Mexico - declaring wedding stuff

My SIL brought 15 boxes that they checked (it was rediculous) for my OOT bags. All of my in laws rode on the same plane (so, there were 7 adults and 5 kids) to spread the packages around when checking in.

There are guys that hang around the baggage claim area with carts. They gave one of those guys $100 and he shepparded the stuff through, communicating in Spanish with the customs people (working with the customs guys btw). No problems, no questions. Highly recommend this strategy.

We just got lucky, I guess. I didn't have receipts with me, didn't even think of it! I had two huge suitcases full of OOT stuff & decor. I also was carrying my dress (well, 2 dresses, 2 suits, 4 bathing suits, & like 8 sundresses) in my garment bag which was HUGE. We had 8 pieces total between the two of us. We fortunately got a green light- they asked us if we were getting married, we said yes- they waved us through...whew~

If you have guests that don't have the maximum 2 suitcases, you can pawn one off on them! :) That's my plan!

My brother had one of my bags and didn't have receipts the guy gave him a hard time, but let him through. He had my freeze dried rose petals and those were taken away....can't bring real petals into the country.

My dad was also asked for receipts. He had my vases and sand ceremony stuff.

You should try to split up your stuff between a few people and make sure they have receipts that don't total more than $300.

hope this helps. My experience was in Cabo last Monday.
Holy crap! I didn't have one receipt when I went....I'm glad you were able to get everything in.

All of our family and friends are in SO. CA and we live in NO. Ca so, we're paying the extra $$$ to check in. We're (let me correct that... I'm exhausted to orchestrate "who will carry what" and wouldn't even know how to get it to them. Less stress and easier in our case if we carried everything ourselves. I think it's $100 extra per baggage!!smile117.gif

again it all depends on who you have checking you in and at your gate! if you get someone in a bad mood, she may just enforce all of the rules and make you miserable. you get someone in a good mood, or just lazy - you'll be fine. we had extra suitcases, or maybe it was just they were over their weight limit - but there was no extra charge. just cross your fingers!

it is confusing and even more so at customs...people are yelling and its just crazy!! I got stopped with all our oot bags..the girl opened it up and looked at the stuff she had to go through and zipped it right back up. On the way back I snuggled my bouquet in but they tried to take our batteries that we brought into mexico! Just smile and look confused you will be fine :):)

As we were running tonight I came up with a genius idea. We are going down for our site visit in August and are bringing 4 big boxes of wedding stuff with us. After reading all these threads about customs I was getting nervous that they wouldn't let us through with all our stuff - I don't have receipts for all of it. Also, I figured it would be hard to say it was for our wedding with no wedding dress. So...I have 2 jcrew wedding dresses in my closest that I bought for $80. I'm going to take one of those with me so customs believes I'm getting married. Plus, I can leave the dress there and use it for my TTD. Think it will work?

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
