WOW! I live in OC so this is not shocking, however, highly embarrassing to the rest of us. I waited almost 5 years for my engagement and most people here didn't even ask me about the proposal or plans, first comment was "what's the ring look like?" My response was to all of them "who cares, I waited 5 years for him not the ring." Could have come from a gum ball machine for all I cared at that point as I was so happy he was making the move to make us a family. Unfortunately the experience taught me that today's society has some serious priority issues!

I am really amazed by people at times. Especially when it comes to some women and the engagement rings they "think" they are "suppose" to have! I personally told my FI I did not want an engagement that I wanted an eternity ring. Because that is what I prefer. I was married before and we had just bands. Then my ex-husband felt the need to get me a new band along with an engagement ring and I didn't like it. I'm clumsy and almost lost my finger a few times! I think some people need to realize that if they are blessed enough to find the right person that really should be enough. The band is what represents the bind of the marriage not the e-ring.

        Ewwww, now that's superficial.

I do know girls that had to pick out their ring like fsil but she's a picky person. it didn't have to do with so much the size of the ring more the design aspect. But i know if her hubby had proposed to her with a different ring she would of said yes regardless because she loved him and wanted to marry him. Her dh had a limit of what he wanted to spend and she kind of just picked the design of ring she wanted.

But to not want to marry someone because the ring is ugly to you is crazy. God bless the poor sap that falls into her web.

(My other favorite is when they ask me if it's real.... I tell them that no, its imaginary.)

Ha! Not just the ring but the wedding also! They can cost 50k+ for a "typical" sit down CC wedding in this neck of the woods- and there is so much social pressure to get it all done! That is what I like about a DW and I think that most DW brides are "true" to their feelings and love as a couple because we are able to see through the crap of a wedding to show off and get married in a beautiful place with our loved ones for just that- true love.

But I have to agree society today with wedding is such crap- it is not only the advertising and marketing of how it should be, it celebriuty's and needing and wanting it ALL. When it comes down to it most people forget it is just the 2 of you.

Hopefully if the bride is that superficial the groom will see through it at the engagement and open his eyes. Otherwise they will most likely become a statistic. O well what can you do?
