Any one else NOT changing their last name?

He got such a kick out of it that he kept the card. and boy was he pissed when i explained to him that publications wont print Dr. next to your name unless you are a real medical doctor -- phds DONT count as a Dr. salutation. but back to topic, i got really sad the other day because i realized that when i legally change my name i have to surrender my old passport and get a new one with my married name (plus pay the fee for a new one, ugh!) i have lots of cool stamps in there from when i studied abroad and i feel like it contains a record of my life's journeys. also, it will have the passport stamp from our wedding trip.... maybe ill just tell them i lost my passport and need a new one, and i can keep the old one! i am changing my name legally but not professionally. i am already established in my career with my maiden name, and in my business, your name is your brand. if people already trust your brand, and then you switch your brand name, you have to rebuild your reputation and trust with clients just as you would if you were a marketer's product. too many people in my industry know who i am since im in the public eye, so changing my name would hurt my credibility.

You get to keep your passport stamps. I think they just replace the one page. I asked a friend this last week because she have traveled all over. She said she is making a copy just incase.

I'm getting a phd, not going to med school. Phds do actually go by Dr. But, you have, PhD after your name, not MD.

Luckily, you will get your old passport back. They simply punch a hole in the old one and mail it back to you along with your new one. I just got my passport last week and they sent my old one back with two small holes to invalidate it. I was glad cuz I wanted to keep my travel stamps too!

My maiden name came with a lot of baggage (long story about my father situation) so I have to say that I was SO unbelievably excited the day I went to the Social Security office and had my name changed. We actually went and had a great lunch and a glass of wine to celebrate getting rid of my old name. But yes, I do believe it is personal preference. If you don't want to change your name, I don't think you should feel like you have to.

I love my last name and somehow my guy's last name doesn't match with my name even a hyphen doesn't sound right. My guy is also very old-fashion so now it's a debate between hyphen or not at all. I vote for not but marriage is all about compromise and what not so we'll see. I will keep you guys posted on who wins!

I wanted to comment on the children situation, mine is very unique. My husband has two children that we have custody of and they share his last name. Our son together has the hyphened last name. We havn't had any problems or difficulty as of yet. "Our" three children are 14, 9 and 2. We are currently trying to teach our 2 year old his long last name LOL. It's fun to hear....

mine has already changed. Because we did things backwards I am already called Mrs. Price so it wont be hard.

I never thought I would either. It was just be too weird to be called by a different name. I thought my FI would be cool with it, but his feelings were hurt. Once I asked him how he would feel to have a different name, he understood. I would be fine with using his name socially, like with our future kids' friends or holiday cards, the "The XXX family". But, legally change it? No, I just can't do it.

oh yeah, morgan i know that you still get to be called dr. with a phd, but in business publications like the one i work at, only people with an MD qualify to be called dr. as a courtesy title in print. you wouldnt believe how ticked people get about that! i would be ticked too, but in this business you only get to be called dr. in print if you have an MD.

Yeah, that would really tick off some professors i know. I understand it though. I hate when you see "Dr. Blankity Blank endorses this health product." Then you learn Dr. Blankity Blank has a phd in eduation.

thats exactly why we dont print phds as dr. because we write about the ad industry! its too deceiving. the health related ad agencies get so pissed when we wont list their CEO as Dr. so and so because theyre a phd
