  1. Yeah, it's mostly because we don't want to spend a lot of money on it. But also because I don't want to have to do all the planning something more formal would require from such a distance!
  2. My fiance and I have to have two AHR since he's from Canada and i'm from the US (Colorado). His parents are planning the one there and nobody from my family has offered to host the one here so it's left to us. We just moved to Louisiana. Obviously i'm not going to plan a reception in LA where nobody lives and would have to travel to. I've been thinking about how to plan the reception in CO and joked around about having it at Dave & Busters (an adult-type bar and arcade, Dave & Buster's Restaurant, Bar and Arcade for Family Fun, Parties, Meetings and More!) This way, they do the cooking, set-up, cleaning, it's informal, fun and entertainment is provided. They can do groups for as little as $25 a person including a $15 game card for each person (buffet). Do you think this would be a fun reception to attend or would it be tacky?
  3. I understand wanting to celebrate with people who aren't invited to the wedding. We aren't and can't invite everybody you know. I feel like asking people I haven't seen in 2 years to fly to Jamaica would be a bit snobby - they'd probably think i'm spoiled for imagining they'd actually go. I guess because of the locations of things, I wouldn't label the one in Mass as a shower. Just a celebration of you getting married. Then it's like you're having two "AHRs", one near your family and one near his. If it's a reception they shouldn't expect a wedding invite. If they ask, just tell them the wedding is small and personal so that party is for everybody else. If it's labeled as a shower and they are invited they might be watching the mail for a wedding invite (just to have one never show). My fiance's family is from Canada and mine from Colorado. His parents are throwing us a Jack & Jill/reception in November for everybody in Canada who couldn't go or wasn't invited to the wedding. We're not getting married till Feb. But his family is planning all of this so they're the one who'll have to suffer the repercussions if somebody is offended! Then later in the spring/summer we'll have one in Colorado for my family. It won't matter then since the wedding will be over with. Anyway, I certainly wouldn't call it a shower (but that's me). Invite the people you want to celebrate with but advertise it as a reception sort of thing. I've gone to receptions before for weddings I wasn't invited (for exactly this situation). They had a small private wedding and then a party later for everybody else. I wasn't offended, just happy I could celebrate with them at all!
  4. Yep, I order some brooches and hair combs from China off ebay. They were cheap and much prettier than I anticipated too! It looks like they've got awesome feedback and have done a lot of transactions. I wouldn't worry about it!
  5. We'd been dating just two months shy of 2 years when we got engaged. Will be getting married two months after our three year dating anniversary.
  6. Thanks!!! its definitely the best feeling...ok, besides the feeling of being in a wedding dress...
  7. My mom emailed me today to ask how fancy I wanted everybody dresses. I told her that I wasn't really too worried about it. She said she was looking for a nicer type sundress. It made me wonder what your moms are wearing and where they got their dresses.
  8. We're just going to do the dinner in one of the restaurants. We're going to be having receptions back home (two - fiance is from Canada, i'm from the US) so we didn't feel the need to spend lots of money on a private reception in Jamaica. Most of the people attending the wedding will probably also attend the receptions and we probably won't be having terribly many weddings guests. Either way i'm sure your guests will be fine. Just remember to have fun and not worry, you're guests will have a blast either way! Oh yeah - and i've heard a lot of people say they just did the restaurant dinner then the whole group went to whatever resort club was available and danced the night away. This way you get free entertainment too!
  9. Ours is Welcome - The Knot: Wedding Web Page Builder though...I don't check or update it often...
  10. We've finally booked EVERYTHING! The resort, wedding, flights, everything!! I'm so excited now!!! A week at Breezes Runaway Bay followed by a Caribbean cruise! WOOOO!!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!!
  11. No kidding. I really want a Maggie (Lavina to be precise). I tried it on back in November when shopping with a friend. I ended up turning really red, got giggly and didn't want to take the dress off. It's the only dress I regret not being able to buy and still think about it. It was out of our price range though (well, I would have paid $1200 but you can only imagine the crying my fiance would do about dropping that much on a dress for one day). I've since found it on ebay for $650 in my size! A lady ordered it and then they called the wedding off. It's never been altered. I have no problems with this. But I have to sell my other dresses first.... So I may not need to necessarily order one but I wanted to know just in case.

I think most salon's tell you to order earlier just in case there is something wrong with the order and there is still time to return it to the company and receive a new one I was in the process of losing weight as well (and still am!) and ordered my dress two dress sizes smaller! Turns out, that the dress fits and I'll actually have to get it taken in still! That's AMAZING! congrats!!

I hope you don't decide to lose weight because of a dress and especially not because your FI is in a way bribing you. I've always struggled with my weight and it's finally come to me realizing that I want to be healthy and full of life and energy, especially when we decide to start a family. Good luck with your dress and your weight loss, just don't drive yourself nuts over how a dress would look if you were thinner. I suggest you find what you love and feel good in now...that way it can be ordered and if you lose, it will be altered. And if not, it will fit like it does now. Did you order your dresses new or used on Ebay? That can be a deciding factor. And did you try them on first before ordering? You'd be surprised what looks good, try something unexpected. So many brides on the forum think they know what they want and then try something totally different and fall in love with their gown. Let me know what happens Haha well thanks. But it's something I keep saying I want to do. I lost that much last year and then have gained 30 pounds since august due to us going on vacation, moving in together, getting engaged and the fact that I had a 6:45am class M-F and lived 45 minutes away..... He knows I want to do it and is just giving me motivation. I didn't try the dress on before I bought them. They were samples from a store who was no longer going to sell the designers. I've tried on around 200 dresses (literally) and have tried ALL kinds so I definitely know what looks good on me. My fear is that some dresses can't be altered that much because of the detail on them. I want to at least lose SOME weight before picking one. Worst case scenario I'll just have to buy one from another bride or online again, neither of which really bother me that much.

Well, good luck! I tried on close to 200 and was just so darn confused! I feel like starting back over at square one without anybody else around so I know if its what I want or if it's what somebody else wants.
  15. THAT isn't too bad. Other people are telling me 6-9! That freaks me out! Our wedding is in 8 months and while I've got two dresses i'm trying to sell them. I bought them on ebay and think they're pretty but I just don't feel special and happy in them. My fiance told me that if I lost 25 pounds he would buy me ANY dress I want!! (I wanted to lose the weight anyway, here's great motivation!). So I was wondering how long I had to lose some pounds before I needed to order...
  16. Got it! Before i had only done a quick reply, this time I quoted myself and it worked! thanks!!
  17. I did reply and it didn't take me to page 2 but shows that I made the last post. My fiance also tried on his computer and it isn't showing a page 2 at all....
  18. I listed two wedding dresses for sale in the buy/sell/trade section and have had people post there but I can't get to page 2 to see them. I tried typing "-2" into the address bar and it still only refreshes page 1. I even tried posting myself in order to see if that would take me to page 2. I use firefox and if I bring up the thread in internet explorer it doesn't even show that there is two pages... http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t44770 Help? Katie
  19. Thanks guys! Last near I lost that much then gained it all back since. I did it mainly using Free Diet Plans at SparkPeople which is an awesome website that lets you track your food and exercise. It's also allows you to talk to other people who have similar goals or reasons for losing weight which is pretty motivating. AND it's completely free! I sound like a spokesperson or spam but it's really the best thing i've ever found for weight loss.
