I also like lots of candids.... Selecting a photog is probably the most important choice you're going to make on many levels. Your photog is going to spend more time with you than any other vendor, so make sure you like their personality and you feel that having him or her around for entire day will "add" to your overall experience. When choosing a photog I would recommend that you look at several photogs work online, then narrow the list down to your top 5 or so. Then call the photogs and speak to them personally. Try to get a sense of who they are, what's their drive? Is it about them and their "art" or is it about making you happy and its really hard to do that over email. Are they trying to sell you "stuff" right from the start? or do you get the sense that they genuinely care about your vision?

  3. well the 20 and 30d will have more options/menus than the lesser models normally. I don't have an xti so I have no idea. but the first time you walk through a doorway and your xti catches the frame and breaks into tiny pieces you will know why I recommended the stronger body.
  4. Morgan buy these: used 20 or 30d 28 1.8 50 1.4 then when more funds become available 430ex flash 10-22 zoom (ask Leigh about this lens - she loves it) 70-200 f4 is the 20 and 30d are going to be more sturdy than the xti. try craigslist, but be careful. you can find a great bargins on CL but also get ripped off. I buy all of my cameras used. I buy my most of my lenses new. in fact if you would like for me to keep my eye out on the professional forums I belong to, I will. I bought the tamron 28-75, and sold it, I hated how slow it focused. I like your thinking with going with prime lenses.. you will love em.

  7. I think its soooo cool that you are into your photography and your photographer as much as you are... us photogs need more brides like you!

  9. ya.. that would be excessive. a good photog will have no issue making great images without having to scout or maybe do it the day before. I would be willing to bet you would be the first on this board to bring your tog to a site visit.
  10. If you are going to fly in a photog... they don't have to be from your home town... if you like their work & the price is right go for it! you might be able to save several hundreds of $$$ due to the location the photog is flying from.. for instance, seattle to mex is way more expensive than say.. texas to mex my .02 and worth every penny =)

Yes, I can agree with that statement. I guess the whole idea of the photographer telling the bride and groom what to do all day is just so wrong to me. Yes, of course if the day needs moving along, or if the bride and groom need help cutting the cake, or simple solutions to timing issues then yes Im more than happy to help out. But Im not going to be in charge of "uncle bob" or go chasing him down at the bar to remind him about the formals. I ask the bride and groom to tell the family where to meet after the ceremony for the formal photos and to nominate a person in the family who knows everyone and can round everyone up. And since I ask for a time line before the wedding, I know roughly when the bouquet is going to happen. So Im anticipating it, and since Im keeping an eye on the bride and groom there's not much chance Im gonna miss it. By the time the bouquet is tossed the reception has been going on for what at least a couple of hours? Hopefully you have found a good angle to capture it by then Back to your regularly scheduled post about hiring a friend... I think if money is not an issue, you should hire a pro... your wedding is only gonna happen once =)

Thats not my style at all. Its not my wedding, Im not telling anyone what to do, I don't get paid to direct the wedding, I get paid to document it. Its the bride and grooms special day and Im not going to spend the day directing them. I simply let the bride and groom do as they have spent countless hours planning to do and Im just there to capture it. Im not bossy, in fact I hate bossy people. There are only two parts of the day where Im gonna assert myself some what, during the family formal session and then I give the bride and groom some direction during the "couples session." Other than that, Im a photojournalist that's having fun. I love to laugh and joke as much as the next person, and I love being around people having the best day of their life, but Im not going to try and control it. I've learned from some very well respected photogs and thats how they do it.

Then we would higher someone to do our TTD since we want to do it in a Cenote. He never photographed a wedding so this would be his first. So I asked him to get his friends together since they just had prom and do some shots and we will then make our decision. no, you're not crazy if you are looking to save money and don't have ANY expectations for what he delivers. yes, you're crazy if you expect anything worth hanging on a wall or placing in a photo album. Its one thing to have all the time in the world to create an image or a body of work for a class, but when time it of the essence and its only happening once and you HAVE to capture it that instant and get it right... its hard to do. Then add in all the pressure of the day.. like many other girls have said, its your choice. Being a photog, I know what it takes so of course Im biased. Other things to think about: does he have a back up camera, back up lenses, back up flashes, back up memory cards? Does he know where to be and what to do for every part of the day? just some food for thought...
