Diy Fiesta Wedding 6 Months Away

Recommended Posts

So,   even though I try to express to myself, a wedding is NOT about the centerpieces, the flowers, the color scheme, I still cannot allow myself to go with what's offered at the resort I will be having my wedding at.   I am not a traditional "bride", I don't want sparkles, starfish, and pink flowers.

In the spirit of getting married in the beautiful country of Mexico, I am going with Mexico as my wedding theme.

I want maracas, I want tequila bottles for my vases, marigolds as my flowers (faux), a few dia de los muertos trinkets, mexican blankets as my table cloths and Virgin de Gaudelupe candles gaaaloooore!!!

My question to brides who have been married and have done purchasing south of the border for their decorations, would it make more sense to purchase most of these items when I get to PDC? Or do it before I leave in order to not have to worry about what I will find, and what I won't find?

I am collecting a few bottles here, since I am not a liquor drinker, as well as purchasing my flowers at michaels as time goes on.  I am just unsure if I should wait to get to mexico for maracas, papel picado and other small things.

We are at 6 months away from our wedding, and I figure I should get a start on things, if I want to make them happen!!! :)

Any advice would be great!  Thank you!

Congrats!

First off, I think your ideas are fabulous. I LOVE the idea of tequila bottles as the vases and I wish I would have thought of that. We have some friends who live in Mexico and I am sure they could have rigged us up!

I think whether you purchase at home or in PDC is more of your personality type. I am very anal and I always feared I would set out to the markets and not find what I wanted.  Also, think about the time it will take to go shopping, personalize the items you do purchase, etc.  Do you have that time before your wedding? I didn't want to take away from spending time with my friends/family, so I opted to purchase it all in Canada and haul it down with me.

Good luck!

Oooh...I'm getting all sorts of ideas on here today. I'm getting married in Jamaica so I may steal your tequila bottle vase idea but do rum bottles...My Jamaican fiance won't have any issue emptying out the rum bottles over the next 8 months in preparation. Haha!

We will be in PDC a week before our wedding, so we got plenty of time :)  I will probably head to Olivera St. in Los Angeles for a head start.  You are very right, it depends on your personality.  I am such a control freak, and if I wasn't able to get what I wanted, I'd be a bit upset!

I think you will do fine in PDC then!  The maracas, blankets, candles, and tequila should be easy to come by!

Hopefully at a decent price too.  Maybe just make sure you have all the items to tie them together purchased at home?? (ribbon, tags, markers, etc.)

Good luck!!!

I know I am getting maracas down there. This summer when we were down there they have them for a $1 each in all different colors, designs. That is all typical Mexican stuff you will have no time getting. Just make a trip to 5th avenue and you'll find it all there!

Your ideas are great and very easy to execute.  Shops, markets and vendors are everywhere!

All of the items you want for a Mexican themed wedding will be readily found in Mexico.  Save yourself the headache and backache of carting it all down there (think about the additional fees for the extra weight in your luggage and the space that could be saved if you don't have to carry these items).

You may find something even more perfectly suited to the area when you get there.

Have fun!

I agree.  ONce you are there you will find even more décor than you can imagine.  Since you will be buying in large quantities you could prob negotiate a better price as well.

this is prob the best way to go!

I started on my paper flowers yesterday, and they're coming out lovely :)  I will be bringing liquor bottles with me, seeing that I don't want to drink 5-10 bottles of tequila in a week.  I'm also bringing the mexican blankets.

Everything else will be purchased on 5th!!!  Thank you for the heads up on the maracas!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
