Wedding Guests That Are Single. How Did You Work Things Out?

Recommended Posts

We will be getting married in Excellence Riviera Cancun. I just shot off an email to the resort asking them what their supplement fee is. I didn't even know such a thing was possible. I just assumed you would have to pay the full double occupancy rate regardless if one or two people!!

I see you are from canada... But you booked direct with hotel? Does this mean you didn't do a package with air/hotel/transfer? It's one of the advantages (one of the only ones haha) of being Canadian when booking an AI. Our package deals are often MUCH better than nightly rates via resort. If you haven't started your bookings or put down a large deposit I would strongly recommend getting a TA to get you quotes for packages your guests can book. Plus you might get some great perks by doing so!

We booked online. We have the package booked and the wedding confirmation date set already. I was able to get a better rate online with Air Transat than with the TA who works with Marlin who is sister company to Transat. I don't really have enough guests committed to the trip to make a discount viable. I predict 4-6 guests at best. You would have to be insane to book directly with a resort unless you knew someone on the inside or something.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how to address the invites to those of my guests who are single. Did you address it to Jane/John Smith and guest? Or did you just figure it was implied that they would bring a guest? Or did you just address it to Jane/John Smith and wait for them to ask you if they would bring a guest?

Interesting, I never thought much about it because my circle of friends is pretty small and I knew I would likely have to pair off some people so I mentioned something like : if anyone requires a room pair up that once I knew who was coming I would introduce them and allow them to work out the details otherwise I would add + guest if I knew that my friend had a new boyfriend or girlfriend that might want to come.

On my invite list there are people who have significant others that will not be attending (their choice), and I am not sure if I should still address the invite to both? My best friend is currently single, but things could change and I want him to feel free to bring someone if he does meet someone in the meantime. I feel like at the moment we have more singles and ' its complicated' than couples.

Yeah, I didn't worry too much about anyone bringing a + 1 simply because this is going to be a super low cost, low fuss wedding. I snagged a nice lace sundress for 25.00 at Suzy. I think the groom's outfit will cost more than mine by a bit. We are taking the complimentary wedding package so whatever that entails, no more, no less is what we are going with. That being said, the idea of an OOT bag was something I learned about here.

We're not huge on tradition so it doesn't matter if my friends want to bring a guest or not, as long as they come and are happy. This might be a different story for a larger wedding where the costs can add up. At best we might spring for the resort photographer just to get a couple of nice pics that we can frame. I LOVE the work that some of the ladies have had done on this website for pics, but we really aren't interested in spending 5k for wedding photographs. I guess we kind of consider every day our special day (for the most part) so have a hard time justifying some of the expenses that are considered the norm for most weddings. Ie: the amazing dresses that the ladies have bought and shown on this site. For myself, I would rather buy a dress that looks beautiful but that I can wear again another summer. OR worse case scenario I wouldn't feel guilty about trash the dress pics ($25.00 lost wont break my heart.

Drat, sorry about the segue! Back to the topic at hand. Depending on how grandiose you are going might determine bodies on the floor, but for me if a friend is going to spend that amount of money to come to my wedding (and of course for a vacation as well) then saving costs for him/her by allowing a guest to avoid too much cost seems like the way to go.

On our invites we put  Jane Doe & Guest.

Most aren't bringing one!!  And they didn't want to bunk up either, just paying the single occupancy fee.

I also did this - posted it on my wedding website!  noone bit as I mentioned above.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
