The other comparisons I can give you is like in our area theirs safe zones and unsafe zones. Theirs neighborhoods I don't cross b/c I know they are known for having gangs so I will use this comparison the same as for Mexico. I hope this helps you. Theirs crime every where. It's just knowing your areas. Or you might consider other places like Vallarta or Cabo I haven't heard anything bad about those areas.

      Hi There,

I am getting married at the Royal in Playa Del Carmen and I am not worried about the violence.  I would be lying if I said that I didn't hear about it but border towns are border towns.  They are not resort areas.  There is another thread a page or so down that talks about the situation in Mexico. It's got great feedback.  I also reccommend looking at the recent Mexico wedding reviews.  Nothing, but great feedback. There are over 20 weddings at the Royal in Playa Del Carmen between now and June 2011.  I agree with the others - Follow your heart and your finance. At the end of the day it will be just the two of you anyway.

Just returned from a week along the coast of Cancun to Playa del Carmen. (October 12-19) Never had any problems or saw anything which would concern me. We also rented a car for the day and ventured into Cancun (not the tourist area) to check out the local markets. Again everyone was very friendly and welcoming. That being said we travelled during the day and made sure we had returned to our resort by dinner time.

I hope you and your family will be able to make a choice that you are all happy with! Good luck.

I would agree. We love it down there, and why we choose that area to get married!

I just recently booked my wedding in Cancun for May 2011. I am also hearing from family and friends that Mexico is not a safe area. I have been going on vacations to Mexico once a year for 4 years. I never once felt safe at during any of my trips. I also know not to travel alone or go off the beaten path. The people who are saying things about Mexico not being safe are people who are not educated.

You have the wedding of your dreams and don't listen to negative remarks.

I'm not getting married in Cancun but I am getting married in Mexico and my FIL's are not coming because of what they hear about Mexico. There is violence in cities across the US everyday. Mexico is a big country. People need to educate themselves before making such a major decision (not traveling to your wedding). I've found that the best and most accurate source of info is the U.S. Department of State. The website is http://travel.state.gov/ and it has travel warnings and alerts about where it is not safe to travel and advice about what precautions to take when you do travel to places including Mexico and you can even sign up to receive e-mail notifications for new alerts. I don't think it is reasonable to cancel your wedding.

I am getting maried here in Feb. I have absolutly no worries. I think Matt put it wonderfully in a different thread when he said. 70% of Mexico's Tourism dollars come from this area. They are going protect it.

              And Honestly Guys....

W Said " I know when I went to Cancun 2 years ago our hotel recommended us not to go out side hotel zone after 10pm and also not to attend clubs or bars outside the hotel zone"

I wouldnt go out at that time in some areas of Milwaukee, where I live, Or Chicago, Or New York, or Shanghai or Bejing .... Everywhere has crime. If your smart you will be fine.

I'd Listen to what Matt said in the above Forum from La Luna. He doubt he would put his lovely wife in danger. Stay where your told. Don't be a loud drunk, respect those around you. Chances are, you will be as safe as you would be anywhere else in the world.

That's horrible that your family is putting you in such a difficult decision. I've had the same conversation with several of my family members, but after informing them about where the violence is compared to where we're thinking of having the wedding and explaining the actual travel warnings, as well as just having common sense about safety in any unfamiliar place, I think they are all at ease with the decision. Can't believe they would really think you, me, or any bride would put their "lives in danger" just for a wedding!! Seriously?!?! Like we aren't aware of it or doing the research on that.. Sorry, just had to vent a little :)

Anyways, I agree with another poster -- it's unfortunate the position your family is putting you in, but sounds like they aren't budging and won't be convinced to come to Mexico. So you have to decide whether their presence is important enough to you to cancel and move it or not. Would you be happy going ahead with it, given who is and is not coming?

Being just two months out to your wedding date, I would wonder if you kept the date but moved the wedding to another country if people would be willing and able to book on short notice. I would hate for you to go through all the stress of moving it, and then still have half the people not come!!!

                Good luck!

I'm sooo sorry your family and guests are giving you a hard time. I just recently booked my wedding for June 2011 and everyone seemed to be on-board and now I know exactly how you feel. Just about every weekend I hear comments from family about what they recently just heard or watched on the news. At first it was really bothersome, I literally had to pull out a map of the entire country and highlight the areas of violence and then show them how far the Cancun/Maya was from that area.

I remember every story they heard was way exaggerated, they were extremely misinformed and pressuring me into thinking I made a poor decision for my wedding location. Now when I see my phone ringing from family or see an e-mail i think to myself "Oh what violent disaster has happened in Mexico now?" bracing myself for everyone's crazy comments. :)

Now when I hear comments, I just laugh. :)  I can't let it get to me, and neither should you. I know that they want you to fold and move your wedding but you should remember why you chose a DW and remember it's your wedding, not theirs. I truly believe no matter how much slack they give you, in the end your family will come around and be there for you!!!!!!
