Bringing items down for relief aid for Haiti

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I saw this on Seavis website (I plan on using them for private tour before the wedding) and wanted to post as brides and their guests in the upcoming months to the DR could greatly help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. Seavis has set up "LEAVE UR CLOTHES" ACTION

If you are heading down there soon there is a current need of the following items:

- medicines and medical supplies (especially antibiotics, needles, pain killers), wheelchairs, tables/ stretchers, water purification tablets / filters,

- buckets and rope (there are wells but no means to get the water out), flash lights, batteries, megaphones, plates and cutlery, tarps to make shelters (plastic car covers will do as well), soap.

If you go to their website they have a list of different drop-off locations but basically said most hotels will take items and send them to a group that will deliver the items.

I will be contacting Alexander (the owner of Seavis) before I leave as needed items might have changed by May and will be letting all my guest know what to bring to help them out.

Please post to your other social network groups (other forums, facebook, twitter, etc.)

Thanks!

Thanks Dolphinluck! I was also thinking of bringing things to help them out when we are there in May. It breaks my heart everytime I read about the country.

I think its great they are doing this. I have already sent money to Red cross. I just want to put this out there and I am by any means trying to be debbi downer, but I have heard that if you take it down to the DR that might not make it to Haiti. Not saying that DR doesn't need the stuff just know it might not end up in Haiti, but that doesnt mean the people getting don't need. I will be bring down stuff for the DR. I had planned on this all along.

I was wondering if anyone else was going to do something like this. Has anyone else thought of donating money to the Red Cross or one of the other relief organizations instead of doing favors? I have gift bags for everyone but we haven't done a favor yet and one of my thoughts was to donate money to help Haiti.

I am in the DR and have lots of friends from Haiti who have been going back to check on their families. They are not able to bring any supplies with them because the border has become very dangerous with robberies. I don't want to make this post negative because I think it is great that people are looking to help, but for now it seems like money donations are the best way to go. Maybe the people at Seavis have a plan to get the supplies there with a larger agency, but I know that without the help of a security company it is almost impossible for individuals to bring large donations all the way into the city. It breaks my heart that there isn't more we can do. Hopefully, it will get easier to get supplies to those who need them soon.

Seavis has done one convoy over to Haiti with items last week and the second convoy just crossed the boarder yesterday. When they did the first convoy they brought back a number of injured Haitians with them on their way to Santo Domingo who couldnt be treated in Haiti. And arranged hospital admission in SDO.

If you go to the website, Alexander has a daily blog of what efforts they have done and plan to do.

I just got back form DR and at the end of the week the hotel passed out a bag asking for anything we could spare to leave behined for Haiti. They also had donation boxes set up. We left what we could, but seeing as this happened whil we were there our suplies were minimal.

Erinsny24-We are going to donate in honor of our guest instead of giving favors. We had planned on bringing school supplies to children in the Dominican Republic before all of this happened. So now I think we are going to do both. Think it is more meaningful :)

Thank you for posting this! I sent a donation online about 20 minutes ago and am watching the fund raising event on tv - boy it just makes me wish I could do more.
