Fear of Flying?

Does anyone else suffer from a fear of flying? I had a bad flight last May and have been experiencing panic attacks and major anxiety about flying -- yet I'm still having a DW haha. Go figure.

 

I'm just wondering if anyone else feels the same, and what you do to help try to get over it for the flight.

OMG Sungoddess...my fiance is terrified of flying! To the point where he breaks out in a sweat and clenches the side of the seats every time we fly! We took a trip to Texas this past summer and fly down there from Wisconsin. The flight down was horrible - he barely made it through - we tried alcohol and everything on the plane to get him calmed down. Needless to say, we didn't fly home...we drove...yes 24 hours straight! He has agreed to go get some medication from his doctor prior to flying to Mexico in June for the wedding. I would recommend getting some meds just to get you through the flight! People don't realize that for some people this is truly a dehabilitating fear. It consumes you! I wish you all the best!

Thank you!! That helps - I know that you can get anxiety pills to help with the flight, so I will be doing that. I don't know where it came from, I never used to be afraid. It's just brutal that I'm ALREADY stressing about it.

I can totally understand why you would be panicked about flying if you had a bad experience recently. I would recommend hypnotherapy, if you're not opposed to it. There are probably downloadable audio files out there that you can listen to on your own or you could visit a specialist who can help train you on techniques to use during the flight.

I HATE flying!! I've never had a truly terrible experience but I just don't like the feeling of not being in control and turbulence just terrifies me. We are headed to Paris in a few months for a belated honeymoon and I actually was doing some research yesterday to get over my fears. I found this website which I saved to my favorites that I thought would help me. Best of luck and I hope you can find something to alleviate your fears!!

i suffer from it but it doesnt stop me going on holiday every year lol.i just worry and have dihorrea for a few days before i go lol.im hoping that the whole wedding thing will occupy me a little more than usual.if you feel like you need something i would go and see you doctor.here in uk you can buy a herbal remedy called calms theyre good?

Hi!! thanks for all the tips -- I am going to look into both the herbal remedy and the hypnothereapy.

 

I also wanted to share this link that I found. It is essentially a youtube site for flying - you can choose whether you want a passenger view (in the plane looking out the window) or cockpit view, side lines etc -- and then choose whether you want to watch the take off, landing etc. It is a little scary, but actually feels like you're sitting looking out the window.

No problem!! It helped a bit -- I think it will take me a few times of looking at that every day for it to really help though!!

I don't know how much help I can be because I am the total opposite of you guys. I am a flight attendant- What I can tell you is load your ipod with calming and soothing music (or fly jetblue because we have tvs in every seat to distract you). When the turbulance is going to be really bad the pilot will get onto the intercom and say "flight crew take your seats" or the flight attendants will warn the passengers about the up and coming turbulance (at least we do). I don't know of a single plane that has been taken down by turbulance alone-- I can do some research though if you want!

 

Good luck flying ladies (and the Fi). I have taken over 750 flights so far and experienced a LOT of turbulance during that time and I am still here and safe to write about it...actually I Have never even had an emergency landing. I worry more about the drunk people then anything!
