Hi girls so I'm currently working part time in a Science Activity Center for the summer part time and they are asking me to come up with a total of 10 activities that I can do with kids ranging from 7 to 13 in age. I will be seeing these kids for 2 1/2 hours each day and the first hour is playing and snack time, while the next 1 1/2 is doing a science activity.....

Any ideas you can help me with? Thank you for your help

Here is an example of a lesson a teacher did last year but I can't use......

Objective

Students will learn the different components of blood and their relative amounts by making their own blood.

Materials

1 spoon cornstarch

1 spoon water

4 spoons corn syrup

~30 drops red food coloring

Clear cup

Spoon

Zip-lock bags

The Science Behind It

When blood is separated using a centrifuge machine that spins things around very quickly, the different components of blood will separate into 4 layers, ranging from most to least dense:

1. Red blood cells (~45%)

2. White blood cells (<1%)

3. Plasma substances like sugar, nutrients, acids, salts, minerals, and proteins (~5%)

4. Water (~50%)

What to Do?

1. Prepare one cup of corn syrup for each student.

2. Pass out the cups to the students with a clear spoon.

3. Give each student one spoon of cornstarch and water. They should stir the substance until it is smooth.

4. Add the red food coloring to each cup until the color resembles real blood.

5. Put the “blood†in secure zip-lock bags for the students to take home.

Umm off the top of my head I would say;

1. The volcano erruption with the baking soda

2. Studying rocks

3. Recycling colored paper (you shred it and then dip it in water)

4. Testing chemicals in water with litmus paper

5. Learning about reproduction in plants by studying fruits seeds

Some of the things I do:

--Volcano with Mentos and Soda, works better than the baking sofda.

--Condensation, precipitation, evaporation, etc.

--Moon Cycle

--Fossils....we did this as a lab. We got raisin cookies and "dug" out the fossils (raisins).

--Force and Motion

--Simple Machines

--Living and Non-Living

These are just ideas, I don't have any plans with me but I can give you some off the top of my head if you like.

Do you have to follow Ca. standards for teaching?

Yes please, thank you Martha :)

The director of the science center did not mention this....The example of the lesson activity above is activity that she approved for last year

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
