  1. carribeanlover, let me know your email and I'll send you those pics as for dance, Carolina said no to Mark and I having our first dance at the restaurant, but she has suggested the gazebo or beach for this, which could be fun. I guess we just bring a CD player, some drinks and party under the stars FYI, you can't pick your music for the reception unless you book the whole place.
  2. I did some googling and here is what I came up with: Dominican Republic Marriage, Funeral, New Years and Last Names Traditions

  4. I think Karma hates me Every time I find a way to make some extra money for the wedding, something comes up. The latest being that my car was broken into while parked in my apartment's parkade. The F#$kers stole my radio, USB, some CDs, change and the tools from my little tool kit they used to remove the radio. I had just picked up a dog-sitting job and now all that money has gone to fixing the window, not the Honeymoon pot like I wanted!!! Not even that, the window cost more then I was paid, so I am further behind. Am I the only one who feels this way?? I am almost paranoid about making extra $$ now.
  5. She just replied to an email I sent her yesterday, so maybe she is still working through them. If anyone is interested I have pictures now of the centerpieces the resort has. Most are flowers, but there is one with candles and shells on a round mirror which is quite nice
  6. Does anyone know if the resort has centerpieces you can rent and if so what they look like and how much to rent them?? After being a BM at my brother's wedding I've decided I want centerpieces, but if the resort has nice ones I don't want to have to go through the hassle of bringing them with me
  7. I believe one of the traditions is that the bride and groom exchange coins as a symbol of how they are going to support each other
  8. I literally know exactly how you feel. My twin brother got engaged a few months after I did and then got married this past weekend, 5 months before my wedding. He had a very traditional in a church wedding and reception. Yep, it did feel like he stole my thunder, and I think a few family members have decided not to go to my wedding because of his. but at the same time it kept people from bothering me too much about how my wedding plans were going. Also, my FI (who was a groomsman) and I (bridesmaid) spent the whole wedding thinking about how ours was going to be so much easier, funner and better. Not to mention I save a lot of money on postage by handing out my invites at a "we're next" event my mom held for us the next morning. That brunch saved us having to plan a reception when we got home and allowed a lot of family members who are unable to make our tropical wedding say their congradulations Has your sister asked you how you feel about this? I don't think it would be out of line for you to explain your feelings about this to her.
  9. I can email you pictures of his, just PM me your email address I think his pics are good and so does my Fiance who knows a lot about photography
  10. You don't need to book the resort photog in advance, you figure stuff out when you get there, which is another reason I am using him Hmm, I just assumed first dance would be us going to one of the Discos, but it seems we can do that at La Uva. Awesome!! I guess I need to pick some music I hope my Fiance did not take me seriously when I joked that he could pick a heavy metal song for the ceremony...
  11. I am getting married in Punta Cana and want my Honeymoon somewere else on the island. Some research pulled up La Romana and I have fallen in love with the idea. Now I am trying tp pick a hotel and I am very tempted by Casa De Campo. Has anyone been there? If so what did you think? Did it feel safe? It looks like a gated community Are the meals very expensive? We would rather not go all inclusive, but I don't want to get there and end up paying $10 for a slice of toast. any help would be greatly appreciated!
  12. They do have a photographer, see above for his wesbite. You will find (unless he has recently updated it) that there are no wedding photos on them, PM me you email if you want to see his work, I got a handful of pics from him. His prices are very reasonable, the catch, his English is terrible. I am fortunate to have my FMIL who is from Costa Rica to work as a translator and my Fiance also speaks Spanish. The nice thing about using him is that you don't need ot pay any money or decide on a package until you get to the resort.
  13. The price seems reasonable, I am paying more then that for the Grand Palladium, though I am less in the off season then your. Trip Advisor can be deceiving, It makes things both easy and hard for us, lol. Keep in mind that when people had a great time they rarely review, but if someone for some reason had a bad time they are quick to write a scathing review. The house keeping staff may seem off since their English may be poor and that makes them uncomfortable with guests, anytime people go somewhere new a few are bound to get sick because simple ingredients are not what they are used to, if may take a few days to become adjusted to.Poor communication is not necessarily the WC;s fault, they are busy people who have lots of brides to look after, you just have your wedding so it's only natural that they won't seem as passionate as you. As for the ants, it's the tropics, there will be bugs no matter how fancy the resort. That all said, 78% is not tons, you may want t check out the top 10 resorts in Punta Cana and compare them. What I like about trip advisor is the fact I could look at undoctored photos of the resort, beach etc which gave me a better idea of what things would actually look like.
  14. 3 days, saturday and sunday don't count, neither do holidays
  15. Wohoo! I'm booked now *happy dance* December 7th is my magical date, though I am doing a symbolic ceremony
  16. Diana I emailed you that info I don't really recall which other hotels I looked at. I used Trip Advisor to see what were the highest rated ones and looked for a hotel that offered a wedding package I liked that was affordable. The nice this about Trip advisor is that the pictures of the resort posted by people are not edited at all like the ones on hotel websites. the downside is that you will find negative reviews for every resort and that can be disheartening. So far I have found the Wedding coordinator (Carolina) at the Grand Palladium to be really helpful, although occasionally slow to respond. Even though I have nto actually booked the resort she has set aside my wedding day.
  17. Hey Diana My Fiance and I are in Alberta. We are marrying at the Grand Palladium Bavaro this upcoming December. As a big cost/hassle cutter I would recommend getting the legal paperwork stuff done in Edmonton. I was initially opposed to the idea, but it is saving us over a thousand dollars! I can recommend a Marriage commissioner to you, he not only fills out the paperwork with you and your witnesses, but he also gives you some little tips on how to put on the rings, sign the book etc during the actual ceremony to make for better photos and stuff. Good luck and Congrats!
  18. I'm marring at the Grand Palladium Bavaro this December and I am Canadian, not from Winnipeg though I have relatives in Branden
  19. O O O! Me too! Or is the cake pic the white one with criss cross icing and some red flowers? I have that pic
  20. Do you know anyone who speaks spanish? maybe the WC would translate your questions for you. I can send you the photos if you'd like
  21. I should mention that my Fiance, who has become an avid hobby photographer thought his pictures were excellent
  22. I have not used the resort photographer, but I plan to. If anyone wants I can email them some pictures of his, just PM me. His name is Jose, his website is here: Welcome to the Frontpage however there are no wedding pictures on it and it is not the most helpful of websites. The biggest hurdle with him is that his English is terrible, almost non-existent. I am fortunate in having a FMIL from Costa Rica who has been happily translating for me and once we are there she will continue to help, as will my multi-lingual Fiance. His rates are good and there is no need to book in advance, or pay for a day pass. The trick is getting around the language barrier.
  23. not sure if this has been suggested, but my FI found a painless easy way to save, a "honeymoon pot" or just savings pot. We pounded a slot in the top of a clean, never used, paint can and decorated it a bit. Whenever we have loose change we throw it in there. I put in at least $10 a week for sure and I snuck a count in a few weeks ago and we had some decent cash going. Our plan is/ was not to open it until before we leave and then take it to the bank and cash it to use on some honeymoon stuff. The thing is when you don't carry change, you make even more of it. Also, were we live a lot of homeless guys are roaming around asking for handouts and this way we can honestly say we don't have any change. I think some of our guests have also seen the pot and slipped their own coins in.
