Officiant - Secular Versus Religious

Recommended Posts

For those who have already had their destination wedding in Riviera Maya/Cancun, was your officiant secular or religious?

I want to make sure that God is included (read: mentioned) in my ceremony, but since the resoirt (Iberostar paraiso maya) chooses the officiant, I'm worried it will be a judge and the ceremony will be completely non-religious.

What was your experience with this?

Your resort should give you the choice of the type of ceremony you want. They usually do because everyone's tastes are different. Definitely contact your wedding planner and ask. We absolutely had the choice when we got married in Jamaica, plus for our renewal we have the choice of how we would like the ceremony. I don't think I've seen anyone here that hasn't had some kind of choice of how much religion they want built in to their ceremony. there are even resorts with Catholic chapels onsite. Your WC is the best person to ask. They should also be able to give you an outline of how the ceremony will run, and you should have input into it. There are several brides to be here that are writing vows so it's definitely an option.

If you tell your wedding coordinator on what you request, they will do it. We just had our DW on Friday and we got the officiant secular. We requested it to be non-religious and the resort was fine with that.

I'm pretty sure I requested non religious on my sheet and all was good. They are fairly accommodating!!! But if you have concern I would defiantly contact your WC for clarification. Heck, before our ceremony started the minister asked me to take a deep breath and just confirmed quietly that we didn't have our own vows!!! They wanna make it perfect for you :)

@@ElizaS are you planning on a legal ceremony? We just had one last month at Moon Palace and we had the option of having the officiant read a prayer. My fiancé is not religious but I was brought up Catholic so we opted to have a short prayer read to bless our marriage.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
