Avoiding Foreign Transaction Fees

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever tried to wire the wedding costs to the resort? Or is everyone just using a debit/credit card? I've been planning to use my debit card but the 3% fee is significant and I'm trying to avoid it.

I thought about a travellers check but my bank (bank of america) no longer has those. I know capital one doesn't charge foreign fees but I dont have a cap one, only an amex which also charges the %

I haven't tried wiring cash but I specifically got a capital one card because of the no foreign transaction fees.  That and the lovely travel rewards that we'll use for the actual honeymoon.   How about using paypal?  Are there fees associated to that (not a huge paypal user)?

I have the Southwest Visa and it has no foreign transaction fee! It also has the best rewards. We paid for both of our flights to Jamaica and 2 family members' flights with our points!

We did the same - it was a lifesaver!  Way worth the $99/year annual fee, plus I got a ton of points for travel :)

There's western union but if they don't take wires that doesn't help. Paypal the fee is about 4% which isn't too bad.

What about travelers checks from another bank? Not sure that you have to actually be a customer to get travelers checks. You could always pay for them by credit card, then just pay off your credit card from your own bank.

I'm running into the same thing and had to pay for Grand Coral with a bank wire transfer to their bank account in Florida. Cost me quite a bit and we're already paying a tough exchange rate on the Canadian dollar.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
