Alteration-1/2 Cost Of My Dress!

Has anyone had the experience of dropping a lot of weight before getting married and then needinfg to get the dress altered? I'm a little worried b/c I'm gonig to start working out with a trainer this month, but am not getting married until Jan/15. SHould I buy a dress in my current size or a smaller size?

I bought my dress off the rack about a year before the wedding.  At the time it was two sizes too big.  In that year I went down another dress size.  The seamstress I went to did an amazing job.  I was worried that the dress wasn't going to turn out, but it was amazing.  The dress fit perfectly.  It did cost a bit more to have it altered, but it was so worth it, especially with how much I saved buying it off the rack.  If you buy it in your current size you should have no problem having it altered to fit your future body.  If you buy it too small, it might serve as motivation for you, but it could also cause a major stress!  But do what you think will be best.

I am currently losing weight and ordered my current size yesterday, I know I will lose more weight so I am prepared to pay the alteration cost on whatever it may be. My consultant said they can alter up to 8 dress sizes in changes.

I actually ordered my dress about 3-4 sizes to small.... For me that was a huge motivation, and now - three months before my wedding - my dress arrived and it fits! Its actually almost a little big It came in a month before expected, so I was nervous!

 

 

Topic starter: Alterations is a bit tricky... To me 900 does seem like a lot. What do you have to do? Is it a dress with intricate details? Are you getting a bustle (that can really boost the price up)?

Mine was bought at my size then, have dropped about 2 sizes down and have 2 months to go before first & last alteration of my dress.

oh no!!! My dress was 850 and I got the train cut off and it altered to floor length. I ordered it that way and the entire bill came to $1100. I have to get the straps taken in when it comes in but thatll be $30 she said. yikes

Wow I had no idea alterations could be so expensive! I am losing weight so unfortunately I'll have to get alterations at some point. I plan to purchase my dress in January in my size at the time or maybe one size smaller and then alter it closer to the wedding. How long does it take for alterations anyway? How far in advance do you all do the final alterations/fitting?

@@helenk Where I went, they said they will start alterations 2 months before the wedding to leave room for weight loss/gain. I lied and said my wedding was in June instead of July to make sure they don't cut it too close ( I was advised to do this by a friend who use to work in a bridal shop).

I was quoted about 1/2 the cost of my dress but I've learned the private shops are a lot cheaper. So ask for recommendations, I bet you can find it cheaper!

I was going to go 2.5 months before but changed it to 2 months as I need to lose my summer weight lol ... And mine doesn't need much (I think). My bridal shop

Wants 8 weeks.

 

For $250 I'd get a hem and a bustle but I know a private shop who did twice the work for a friend for 1/2 the cost.
