One important consideration is that every country is different in their requirements - one important consideration is the residency period.  For example, in Mexico you must in the country for at least 3 days before the wedding in order to complete the paper work and blood test.  As mentioned above in some posts, cost can be a factor too (translation of documents, payment for the notary - if it isn't included in your hotel wedding package - blood tests, etc.)

Some countries also charge an additional fee to have the marriage license mailed to you - all little things that can add up.

Keep in mind too that symbolic weddings are really a smoke & mirrors show, no one needs to know that your marriage license was signed a few days ealier!

One of the advices I read from a photographer posted in this site was no one would be thinking or planning a divorce when the couple is planning the wedding. But may be it should be one of the factors. If you are legally married in Mexico, you would have to go back to Mexico and get a divorce. Another cost and bitterness.... I just want to share what I read.

We are getting legally married in Canada and having a symbolic wedding in Mexico. One of my dearest friends is a pastor and will ordain our wedding in mexico as well. We are only informing our immediate family that we are getting married pre-mexico. We are planning to sign a piece of paper in mexico at the ceremony to make it 'look' real, but for the most part all of our other guests will not know. We will be using our wedding date in mexico as our anniversary date for the years to come.

If someone from Canada marries you can that be your legal wedding for Canada or do you have to be in the country ?

I'm not sure that's true as I read that Mexicans can get a divorce here if they've been here for something like 6 months.  So if Mexicans can get divorced here, I'm pretty sure we could too.  Not that I plan to or wish that on anyone!

As for us, we've decided to go for the legal ceremony even though it'll be more stuff to do stuff to pay for.

I think we will be doing a symbolic.  I read on another post that PA does not recognize out of country marriages ( I am still researching).  To keep the confusion down, I would hopefully like to have been legally married on our dating anniversary and then whatever our official wedding date is be the other.  That way we have only one additional date instead of 2.

I was so conflicted with this decision. But we are going with symbolic and not telling anyone. It just seemed easier but of course, the ceremony we have in Punta cana will be our wedding date :)
