Secrets Wild Orchid Wedding Review - June 20, 2015

Recommended Posts

I got married at Secrets Wild Orchid in Montego Bay on June 20, 2015.  I had 55 guests in attendance!  Everything turned out so beautiful, I was very pleased with the wedding coordinators and their efforts towards making my special day so wonderful.  I'll try to cover everything regarding my experience from the planning to the BIG day.  I really felt compelled to write this journal to give inspiration and guidance to other brides who are anxiously awaiting their big day!  I was a wreck leading up to the wedding.  All of the stress and indecisiveness on my part was totally unnecessary as everything turned out wonderful.  So brides, enjoy the process and have fun as it will go by so fast.  Cherish every moment!!!  Ok, here we go!

Save the Dates

We took one of our favorite photos from our engagement photo shoot and ordered magnet save the dates from Vista print.  After using coupons, we only paid like $100 - $150 for our order.  They turned out great and it was helpful having the magnets as guest attendees could keep this on their refrigerators for convenience.

Inspiration Pics

I really didn't have an particular colors for my wedding.  My overall theme was more "tropical".  These are the inspiration pictures I provided to the resort for them to execute.  The arch on my actual wedding day was slightly different from the picture but I was still pleased with the final result (pictures of that later in the review).

Jamaica Guest Map

I got this idea from another bride on this site and started looking up my own unique ideas.  I found a seller on Etsy that sold these destination  maps.  During the cocktail hour at the wedding, I had the guests to sign their names on the map.  We are planning to get this framed and will put it in our home.  I absolutely love this map and how it turned out.  The Etsy seller does custom work for all of her maps and she captured what I wanted perfectly!

Wedding Trinkets

I got this idea from yet another bride on this site.  I love how everyone shares their wonderful ideas!  I ordered badge holders from Amazon for really cheap and ordered custom lanyards for the wedding attendees.  Everyone put their room keys in the badge holders.  This allowed us to chill on the beach without worrying about losing the room key or keeping track of it.  These were a huge hit!  Destination brides, definitely look into this if you're interested.  I was also planning to bring bags of candy for the guests but it took up an entire small suitcase and given all of the other items we had to bring, it just wasn't worth carrying.

Wedding Ceremony

We had the wedding ceremony on the beach at 5pm. It was hot earlier in the day but got a little windy as the wedding got closer.  This was a welcome relief for the guests as they waited for us to arrive.  I paid to rent the speaker system from the resort.  I love music so I definitely wanted those good vibes in the atmosphere during the wedding processional.  We bought bamboo wedding fans that were placed in each of the guests seats.  The turned out to be a big hit!  The only hiccup before the ceremony was them adding the arch flowers a couple of minutes before the wedding started due to the wind.  The coordinators mentioned they typically don't do that but wanted to be safe versus sorry which I understood.

Reception

We had the wedding reception inside at one of the ballrooms.  This was a welcome relief from the heat earlier in the day.  We paid for DJ Blu to handle the music and he did a wonderful job (he also DJs at Margaritaville at night).  Prior to the reception, they ask for a list of songs you'd like played (granted he only played like one of the songs on my list but it was ok because he had us "turnt up" all night). :)  The wedding coordinators turn you over to the ballroom attendants once everything gets settled.  The attendants were very thorough and made sure my husband and I had enough food, desserts, and alcohol the entire night.  We didn't even have to leave our sweetheart table except to dance so that was awesome.

Photography/DVD

First, regarding the DVD, the media department has this ready to go about two days after the wedding.  Before the final editing took place, they asked us which songs we wanted played on the DVD while the footage was being shown.  Upon viewing the final product we were definitely "wowed"!  The DVD is about 45 minutes long and contains footage of the wedding ceremony, the guests during cocktail hour, and the first part of our reception.  This is a great momento that we will cherish for years to come.

We decided not to solely utilize the resort's photographer.  We had the Secrets Ultimate Wedding Package which only allows for one hour of coverage.  This was just not enough time for me!  So we have ventured out and looked into outside photographers.  We chose Dwayne Watkins who is based out of Montego Bay.  If you've never seen his work please check out his blog.  He is fantastic!  We haven't received our wedding photos yet but I know they will be outstanding based on his previous work.  He is definitely on the pricier end but I don't regret my decision at all.  Your wedding pictures are for a lifetime so it's important to get the quality you're desiring.  For the one hour the resort provided, we told them to shoot the guests during the cocktail hour while Dwayne and his assistant did our bride/groom shots.  So everything worked out perfectly.

Overall

I had a wonderful experience at Secrets Wild Orchid.  The wedding coordinators were fabulous while we were there and they ensured all of my wishes were met!  About two months before the wedding, the e-mail communication between the coordinators really ramped up.  So brides, be patient with them prior to this time as they are probably dealing with other stressed brides like myself during their actual weddings.  The employees at Secrets Wild Orchid are super friendly and make you feel like rock stars!  Everyone remembers your name/face everywhere you go.  This definitely felt like home.  So brides, be patient and everything will fall into place.  Trust me, all the stressing mean nothing when it's all said and done.  So relax and enjoy the process, Mon!

Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience! I love to hear from other Montego Bay brides and will take your advice about staying calm since I'm still 3 months out!

I love your tropical flowers and your orange wedding arch. Dwayne W was not available on our date but I am sure your pictures will be great, his portfolio is amazing.

Would you mind sharing the name of the Etsy seller you ordered your map from? I may need to borrow that idea :) Also, did you plan any activities off the resort for your guests?

Thanks!

I forgot to include this in the original post but I also created a welcome letter utilizing ideas from other brides on this site.  We did do an excursion of the Montego Bay area.  It did not turn out as eventful as I had planned because I had 55 people on the tour.  One of the 1st stops the tour guides took us to was a shopping stand and we ended up being there like 2 1/2 hours. :o  But it was good in that everyone got the gifts they wanted before returning back home.  Most of the other tour items we had to skip so that we could get back to the resort in a timely manner.

Thank you for your review! I know it will help future brides.

Your dress is beautiful and I love you photos! Happy to hear it all went well. We loved Jamaica and hopefully will be able to go back sometime. I remember Dwayne Watkins' name going around when we were planning our wedding 4 years ago and his reviews were excellent!

Congrats on being a Mrs!

@@JamaicaNicole - send me a personal message and include your email address so I can send you the template.

I ordered the bamboo fans from the below site. I ordered just enough for my guests so I don't have any remaining. The price is very reasonable though in my opinion.

Amazing review.  I definitely think that it will help future destination brides thinking about getting married at Secrets Wild Orchid.  Congrats on your marriage.  Your wedding day looked perfect.  I've never been to Jamaica before, but I've heard fabulous things and we're hoping to go for our one year anniversary.

Hi:

Love your review. I am getting married June 10, 2017 at secrets. Time is ticking and I am getting nervous.

Where your flowers very expensive? I don't like carnations or daisies but I can't break the bank for flowers.

Also, where did you get the custom lanyard?

    • Unfortunately, pregnancy yoga training is a time of extreme. It's all part of the deal; even the stress is often a normal effect of the hormones that are raging through your system. But you have to keep stress at a controlled level because you have to think of your health and that of your baby. Here are some tips on how to keep stress at bay during pregnancy: 1. Evaluate your activities. Pregnancy is a time of many changes; your body is changing and your life is also about to change. You are transitioning to becoming a new mother. While you're at it, it's high time to change your activities as well. Evaluate your activities by checking your schedule. Perhaps you lived quite a busy life before. That can be pretty stressful and may even put your pregnancy at risk, so it would be best to slow things down a bit now that you're pregnant. Pregnancy has its way of affecting your mood and making you feel tired all the time, so there will be times when you just won't be productive. So instead of piling up on tasks, choose activities that you can drop or delegate to someone else. 2. Break the bad habits. Whether you really were trying to get pregnant or pregnancy crept up on you, somewhere along the way you will face the need to break your bad habits. What are these notorious bad habits you definitely have to say goodbye to during your pregnancy? · Smoking · Alcohol consumption · Too much coffee or any other beverage that contains caffeine One good way of breaking bad habits, even ones that you've had for years, is subliminal programming. Subliminal programming means re-training the mind; it works in two steps: · Removing negative embedded factors in the subconscious Since this method communicates directly with the subconscious, which is responsible for directing our actions and behaviors, it is more effective than consciously deciding to stop smoking or drinking. 3. Take up meditation. If you haven't tried it before, now is the best time to take up meditation. There are many tips and instructions online as well as many books on the subject. You can learn it on your own or join a meditation class. Meditation is the art of emptying the mind to relax both the mind and the body. It is also very effective in regulating emotions, which can be hard to control when you're pregnant. If you have plenty of time to spare, join a yoga class. 4. Block the horror stories. Every woman who's been pregnant loves telling her pregnancy stories to non-pregnant or newly pregnant women. It's their way of saying "welcome to the club." While good advice is particularly helpful, most women tend to share horror stories, or stories of how stressful and emotional pregnancy was for them. You may also use subliminal messages to train your mind to block these negative stories, so you can focus on the positive things about your pregnancy. There are many positive things, too, the biggest of which is the new life inside you, so you won't run out of good thoughts to nurture in your mind.   Safe and Easy Workouts to Do During Your Pregnancy The main rule of thumb when exercising while pregnant is to modify your workouts to suit the trimester you are in and to honor what is happening to your body. What is deemed appropriate for your first trimester is certainly not for your third trimester. However, there are several exercises that you can perform right through to the end. Let's examine the first trimester. You are just beginning your nine-month journey. You may be feeling a bit more tired, perhaps queazy, but you may not even be showing a baby bump yet. At this time, if you have already had a workout program in place, you can continue with what you've been doing.  Some doctors may not advise any lying down exercises at any time during your pregnancy, but speak with your physician to determine if this modification is necessary. Appropriate exercise for the first trimester: • your normal routine (within limits) • walking • swimming • low impact aerobics (keeping heart rate low) • strength training • yoga As you move into your second trimester, you may be feeling a surge of energy but your body is showing the pregnancy more and certain workouts may not feel as good. Around this time, lying down is not totally recommended and keeping heart rate low and core body temperature low is important. The importance of abdominal and pelvic floor strength should be highlighted throughout your pregnancy, so if you haven't already started, Kegal exercises should be implemented in all workouts you do. What is a Kegal? The pelvic floor muscles are like a hammock of muscles located at the base of your torso and under your pelvis. To do a Kegal, simply engage the muscles that you would use to urinate. Keeping these muscles strong may make for an easier birth and less pregnancy related incontinence. Appropriate exercise for the second trimester: • Kegal exercises • pelvic tilts (with head elevated with pillows) • walking • swimming • easy yoga • strength training (lighter weights) As you move into your third trimester, you are now getting to the top of your pregnancy weight which may change the way you stand, how long you can sit, and your sense of balance. Aches and pains from your changing body are probably felt more now. Workouts now become about making you comfortable and making sure you simply maintain what you have. A safe abdominal exercise, which also makes your back feel great, is an all-fours cat stretch and contraction. To do: on a rug or sticky mat, go down onto hands and knees. Keeping back straight, simply pull your abdominals in towards your spine without altering the straight position of your back.. Repeat 10 times. From there, round your back up, like an angry cat, feeling a stretch over your shoulders and spine, then release. Repeat 5 times. Prenatal yoga is great for elevating your mood, may help you sleep better, and decreases pregnancy aches and pains. Just make sure you speak with your doctor first and remember to never start a new program while pregnant. Keeping up with what you're doing is super and will make for an easier birth and a faster recovery.
