New Bride to be... and don't know where to start???? HELP!

Recommended Posts

We just got engaged (yay!!) a couple months ago and have decided on a destination wedding - somewhere on the Mayan Riviera.  We are thinking April 2014, so we have some time to plan but I'm wondering if anyone can help me on WHERE TO START???

I've spoken to a travel agent (TA)- who said it's far to early to really discuss anything with them.  I would really like to get lined up with a TA in my city (Victoria, BC) that specializes in destination weddings.  I don't know how to find recommendations for that?

I've sent out a preliminary email to friends/family letting them know our plan so I can get a rough idea for numbers.  Still waiting all those to filter in.

Other than that, I'm at a loss as to what next?  And when is a reasonable time to get things happening.  I want to be organized!!!  Any advice/input would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

I started early too.... wish I hadn't since I'm so impatient with everything!

I may just be bitter right now with my travel agent and Sunquest, but beware that if you start looking at tour companies too early, they are likely to change their dates, prices, and flight schedules closer to the date. I started looking a year ago, settled on my resort, and I'm still waiting for flight schedules for all of the tour companies (we leave in January..still 8 months away), and it's driving me bonkers since I was so over-prepared!!

I would start by chosing a resort. Once you find a travel agent they can help recommend good ones that fit your requirements ( ex all inclusive, allows children if guests are bringing them, 24 bar, room service). Also look for how much the wedding package costs at the resorts. I was torn between 2 resorts, and then I found out that one resort charged $55 PER GUEST for the wedding package, on top of a flat fee!

You will need rough numbers eventually but it is pretty early and a lot of your guests might not have any idea. And when it comes time to book, you may be surprised by the number of people who didn't initially show interest and now want to come.. This makes it dangerous to buy things too early (ex if youre bringing favours, chair sashes, fans, etc)... I has 64 people initially show interest, and now have nearly 90 coming, and we are still 8 months out..!... We bought 100 of everything, so we will see what happens hehe.

Hopefully this doesn't sounds too negative, I'm feeling quite flustered with myself for trying to force everything to happen! I will be in my last year of law during the wedding and want everything planned before summer ends, but it looks like most things need to be done closer to the date. If I could go back in time, I would have tried to not plan so early and save myself the worrying!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
