Poll~ Legal vs. symbolic ceremony?

Recommended Posts

We are doing the legal part here this Friday. We don't want it to be a big deal, but his parents are going (not in my original plan-but what can I do). I also would be interested in knowing what everyone wore to theirs. I don't want to be supper dressy but I also don't want to go in jeans.

We are going the legal route, we've been together for 20 years already, so we don't have any problems waiting for the marriage certificate. We don't need it for any time limited purposes so waiting 5 months won't be a problem. The first time we went to the Domincan Republic (around 8 years ago), we always knew if we were to get married it would be there so having a civil ceremony at home never even entered our head.

Doing symbolic b/c the venues we looked at said we couldn't get a judge on a Sunday in Mexico (not sure if that is true?). Didn't want to get married on Saturday b/c not legal in Jewish law, but it turns out we're not even having a rabbi, so it is all just symbolic. Just having a cousin serve as officiant. Going to the courthouse sometime next wk hopefully!

We are planning our wedding day Dec 29/08 in Holguin Cuba. So far we are planning for the legal ceremony ..... but there is a small glitch. John's divorce isn't final yet. They say 6 - 8 months but then we have to have everything translated into spanish and down there 13 weeks prior. We may very well just have a symbolic ceremony if we can't get it all done in time.

WE are doing a ROV, we didn't want to but will do the legal ceremony here prior as a secret and not let anyone know- just for our sanity... which will bring me to many other questions... I am searching threads now to see if I can find my answers! LOL

this is by far the hardest descision i have to make for the wedding- im perfectly fine with getting married at our local courthouse a few days before we leave and then doing a symbolic ceremoney in DR but im catching alot of slack from my future inlaws- there religous and my family is not, i just want to avoid all the paper work hassle and i really wanted to get Pastor Rick york he does such a great job as the other option is a   (broken english 5 min Traditional ceremony) should i be more considerate? nope dont think so lol

We are having a small ceremony for the family that isnt able to come to mexico, they will be about 6 people there and its going to be in my grandmas backyard with a friend of theirs whos a JP. We initially were just going to go down to the courthouse and have the papers signed but once the idea popped into my head that I could give homage to my grandparents and my dad who wont be there in Mexico, it was a done deal. My FI's family isnt overly pleased, they are worried we will feel married before mexico. Im honestly a little worried about that to but hey who doesnt want 2 weddings!! LOL

We are doing our legal ceremony at home -- haven't 100% decided when (before or after, how many days etc) but I think it will be less of a headache and cheaper than dealing with the medical and translation required to do a legal ceremony in Mexico.  We are only letting a few people know that we won't be legally married in Mexico (mostly the friends who are close enough to know that a legal ceremony in Mexico requires blood test etc since I was on the fence about this for a while so they heard my pro/con arguments).
