Dreams Riviera Cancun - Brides post here (new thread)

Some questions for you ladies:

1.  What fabric is everyone using for the Chuppah?  Chiffon? Organza?  How many yards are you getting?

2. How are you all getting all of your wedding stuff down there.  I am not going to ship, I am going to take it with us on the plane but am trying to figure out what to pack it in.  I am thinking just like plastic tubs (like you would use for storage).  Then if I didn't want to bring them back, it wouldn't be a big deal.  What are YOU doing??

Thanks!

Wine Cellar: You would need to  pay for the upgraded wine - this would be a PRIVATE event, for just your group in the wine cellar.  If you just want a reservation in a restaurant for a small group you can talk to the manager but that would not include use of the wine cellar.

Semi-Private Event: our welcome party got switched to this because the resort was having a celebration for guests for the independence day that day...it worked out because all the guests were at the party and OUR guests had El Patio to ourselves.  I was not charged at all for this - but that's because we had originally planned on a private event and they had to change it.  But I had been quoted previously the $15pp.

Transporting wedding stuff down: Do not ship, it is very risky.  We packed two small suitcases, one large suitcase and duffel bag...then on the way home we stuffed the duffel bag into one of the suitcases...We have elite status on continental so we didn't have to worry about baggage fees. But the plastic containers are also a good idea so you don't have to deal with all that stuff on your way back.  We left EVERYTHING down there except two signs.

My dilemma is that I don't know which bar to choose?  Any suggestions?  There will be 37 of us and we will likely want to say a few things and give out some gifts but we certainly don't need anything totally private.  Do any of the lounges have a sort of separate area?  Kind of off to the side...or is maybe set up in a way that if we are all there together and we want to say something to our group or give out gifts, we won't be intruding on the other hotel guests? Maybe it would FEEL private??  I know, I'm probably crazy!  I am just trying to work on my welcome letter and I wanted to include an invitation to this welcome party.  I was hoping to get it figured out before I get there!

Thanks ladies!

We are doing kind of the same thing, just having an informal "Welcome to Mexico/Meet and Greet" cocktail gathering. I don't know about private space, but I was informed by the folks on the Facebook Fan Page that my best options were the lobby bar or Desires. And since we will have kids there as well we are opting for the lobby bar.

I was planning on putting everything in suitcases, but plastic tubs may not be a bad idea either! With the suitcases I have a bunch that are a set and get stored inside of one another (if you know what I mean), so I figured I could just send one empty suitcase back with someone (filled with the other empty suitcases that I used to bring everything down!).

welcome party is being held on the terrace of desires bar.. private event with less than 60 of us.

I bought these cheap suitcase for 12 bucks that fold and they are HUGE!!  get them!  i am putting all my welcome bags in these.  I am carrying on the plane my glass vases for the candy buffet!!!

Im getting so EXCITED!  BTW Maria from DRC ANSWERED ALL MY QUESTIONS in LESS than 12 hrs!!  I was FREAKING OUT..  NOW I AM RELEAVED!.  My only issue with DRC is that they continue to try to make every extra dollar they can.  They wanted to charge us 15.00 each for 10 of us to sit together while we are on vacation eating dinner together!  I said NO WAY!!!

i also had something that stated 350.00 for welcome party/rehearsal dinner.. projector and screen..   now they are saying 780???

anyway..im venting I know it will be PERFECT WHEN I GET DOWN THERE!!!

DID ANYONE USE THE VIDEOGRAPHER?? AND WHAT PKG DID YOU DO??

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, but we did not eat in the wine cellar.  We had a couple of tables in the restaurant that they put together for us in a great private location and decorated the table with rose petals.  But we were not n the wine cellar.

I asked in the beginning (way long ago) for the wine cellar because my group is so small so we could all sit together in a nice romantic area and just eat off the menu, and i was told the bride and groom MUST purchase upgraded wine to use the cellar. 60$ worth of upgraded wine to be exact for every couple there, so times that by 4 and you're up to like almost 300$ in wine! did they make you do this??

I've just found out that the date I booked at DRC over a year ago has now been booked for another wedding too.  I'm very disappointed and worried this will spoil our day and also make using the resort for hair and make-up a problem if there are 2 wedding parties using them on the same day.  Has anyone else shared their wedding day and if so how was it?  Our date is December 9th 2010.

Right after the ceremony, a waiter served champagne to everyone and we got some pictures with the wedding party and the whole group.  Then we all went to the swing bar on the beach and had drinks and mingled.  Some people layed under the palapas and talked and had a few drinks. We got cigars for the guys after the ceremony too.  Everyone stayed there while we got the rest of our pictures and until it was time for the reception.  It really worked out well.  These pictures are in the palapas right next to the swing bar.

The lobby bar is huge and has lots of areas where you could separate yourselves into a group.  Desires has a terrace with a lot of seating you could use for a toast and speeches/giving out gifts. I would check out both of those places as soon as you get there and decide which one you like best.

Unfortunately I actually think it is pretty rare to have your wedding day all to yourself at Dreams resorts! In fact I have heard that 3 or even 4 weddings a day are possible (CRAZY), though it sounds like the new WC has changed policy and is now limiting to 2 weddings per day. From what I have heard from past brides, this doesn't seem to be too much of an issue, as long as you've already requested where you want your ceremony and reception, etc, as those things could be unavailable if the other wedding has already requested them. They try to stagger the times of the ceremonies and it sounds like there's enough room to even have two receptions going on at the same time without one interfering with the other. I would love to have my wedding day to myself as well, but I won't be surprised if I'm not the only one getting married on my day either. Hopefully I will just have the bigger group and also get some priority since we booked so long ago! lol.

BTW you are getting married one day after me!!!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
