We are hoping to have our catholic ceremony in Puerto Vallarta. I found a few churches, but haven't started contacting any yet. Our Lady of Guadalupe is too big for us. Let me know if you girls have any suggestions. I also have no idea where to start as far as paperwork and making it legal.

hi everyone! we have booked El dorado Royale and have booked the chapel there for our Catholic wedding. We have 15 months yet for planning but i am worried about the paper work we will need. What do you need to get from your Parish Priest? How long in advance would you organise this before getting married. It is really important to us that it is a Catholic ceremony but really want to have a destination wedding. i want everything to be perfect just a bit worried about everything we will need and whether to crack on with the preperations or wait just now.

Help!!

Thanks xxxx

The El Droado Royale is beautiful! Congrats! I wasn't aware they had a Catholic ceremony option. We are getting married at the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo which also has a Catholic chapel.

We met with my pastor last week and he basically said do your pre-cana marriage prep class., then come back and meet with me to discuss what I need to send to the diocese in Cancun.

Here is the info I was able to obtain:

A Catholic wedding in Mexico is easy to arrange and is recognized as an official Catholic wedding when all the official documentation and requirements have been fulfilled. Catholics can be married in local Mexican parish churches. Permission from your parish priest to marry outside of your parish is required and this permission must be approved by your parish's diocese.

The marriage couple must complete the Pre-Cana classes, the required pre-marriage courses, and the Pre-Cana certificate is required prior to the wedding.

All official documents required for a Catholic wedding must be received 30 days prior to your ceremony. Rarely are their exceptions to this 30 day rule.

Requirements for Couples from Outside the Diocese
Requesting to Be Married in the Diocese of Cancun-Chetumal, Quintana Roo including Catholic Churches located in Playa del Carmen, the Riviera Maya, Xcaret, Puerto Aventuras, Tulum and Cancun

If you have not already done so, please contact your parish priest/deacon regarding marriage preparation. He is responsible for your marriage preparation and instruction.
Your parish priest will assist you with obtaining the necessary documents, permissions and dispensations (if needed).

He is responsible for forwarding the following information and documents to the chancellor of your diocese for review:

a letter of recommendation stating that:
you have been prepared according to the marriage preparation guidelines of your diocese;
permission has been granted for the marriage to be celebrated in Mexico (Canon 1115);
a current original copy of the Baptismal certificate of the Catholic party.
an Affidavit of Freedom to Marry for each party signed by a competent person (e.g. parent, relative or close friend) and the signature witnessed by a pastor/priest/cleric of the person vouching for your freedom to marry.
the completed Pre-nuptial Investigation form used in your diocese.
Color photos of the Bride and Groom
if applicable:
a dispensation for disparity of worship
a dispensation from canonical form
permission for Mixed Religion
decree of nullity of a former marriage
(If either party was previously married, a declaration of nullity for a lack of form or formal annulment must be obtained.)

When all the required information is received by the Diocese of Cancun-Chetumal, a Nihil Obstat will be granted and sent to the priest/deacon officiating at your wedding in Mexico along with all pertinent documentation.

I printed out a copy of this and brought it to our meeting with the pastor. He was very pleased with this as many priests have no idea what is needed from them.

No problem, you're welcome! The Catholic aspect was very important for us too. Our families were all cool with our DW but his parents' one request was that we get married in the Catholic Church because both of his grandmas are from Poland and are strict Catholics.

Our wedding is in January 2011 and I contacted our priest in March. He was busy with the Lenten season and asked me to call back after Easter. We met with him last Monday for the first time. We have not gottten any paperwork done yet. We have to sign up for pre-Cana which will be in late June. After that is complete, we'll meet with our priest again and see what's next.

I say why not get started now. Since you've got 15 months, there's prob not a whole lot you can do yet in terms of wedding planning since the WC's at resorts are not too responsive till it's closer to your date. So why not get this out of the way. Contact your local priest and find out about where pre-Cana is offered. There is usually a 3 month waiting list.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
